Visa Exempt extension - quick question

I have a 30 day VE entry which expires on 26 Aug and I want to get a 30 day extension at Immigration, Mae Sot. What is the best date to apply? Should I go now or in the two weeks before expiry?

Where does a tourist get a 30-day extension to their 30-day Visa Exampt stamp in BKK and how much does it cost? 

 

I seem to recall this request is performed at a huge Gov't building.
