Tourists evacuated from riverside resorts in Pai district as flash flood sweeps through

PAI:-- Many foreign tourists and local villagers in Pai district of Mae Hong Son province were evacuated to higher ground by rescue workers after the Pai river overflowed its banks and swept through several river-side resorts and houses.

Monsoon rains sent brownish runoffs rushing from the mountains downstream into various creeks which eventually flow into the Pai river which burst its banks.

All the evacuated tourists were moved to the auditorium of the Pai district for temporary refuge.

Meanwhile in Pang Mapa district, flash flood from the Lang river partially submerged a bridge connected with a road leading to Tambon Tham Lod, a tourist attraction of the province, making it impassable for all vehicles.

The Lang river merges with the Pai river in Pai district which flows through the Muang district.

Local villagers who live near rivers and creeks have been warned to move their valuables to higher ground and to evacuate to safer places in light of flash floods.

Cleanup launched for flood-hit Pai district as another flood looms

PAI: -- Both foreign and Thai tourists helped local residents and officials in a big cleanup on Sunday to clear the main road in Pai district of Mae Hong Son of the leftovers from a flash flood which swept through this mountainous tourist attraction on Friday.

Water from the overflowing Pai river has receded to normal leaving behind tonnes of mud and garbage on the road, in houses and resorts which need to be disposed of to return the town to normal business.

Pai chief district officer Mr Thanakrit Chanthachamrassilp mobilized all local administration units in the district as well as troops from the 5th infantry battalion, policemen and local residents to carry out a big cleanup today. Thai and foreign tourists who are still in the district also offered a helping hand.

However, there is widespread concern that flash flood may return for another round because of the heavy rains on the mountains where the Pai, Nam Lang and Nam Khong rivers originate.

Muang district chief officer Mr Pisit Kitboon-anan has instructed all local leaders in the district to warn residents and operators of riverside resorts to be on the alert to brace for more possible floods in the coming days.

Why ???....

Because tourists aren't allowed to work in Thailand without a work permit.

You believe Immigration Police will be there checking the Immigration status of those foreign volunteers who are helping the  troops from the 5th infantry battalion, policemen and local residents clean up ????

This is almost as silly as those who suggest that someone painting their own house, doing their own gardening or mowing the lawn need a work permit as they are taking a job from a Thai...

You don't have to like it but it's the law. Even volunteer work requires a permit.

You've had your 5 mins of fame now what?:coffee1:

It doesnt matter where you are on the planet.... If you remove the vegetation in the rain water catchment area then expect floods to follow. The clearing in the hills continues unchecked and is even encouraged. The round-up salesman can buy himself a new D-max.... Good to see agricultural progress in Thailand is the same as everywhere else.

I hope those tourists all have work permits.

I was wondering how many posts in before this classic forum trope comes up - and it was the first :D

Leave it a little while.... the "If you don't like it go home" comment is sure to crop up... :coffee1:
