BANGKOK, 17 August 2016 (NNT) - South Korea is considering lifting a 12-year ban of Thai poultry, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, with the first batch expected to be shipped by the end of this year.

Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Gen Chatchai Sarikulya talked about his recent visit to South Korea where he met his Korean counterpart on August 7-10. He revealed that South Korean officials will soon travel to Thailand to inspect the quality of frozen and chilled chicken before lifting the ban. He expects Thailand to be able to resume its exports to South Korea by the end of this year.

The poultry ban started in 2004 due to avian influenza concerns.

Gen Chatchai said he also discussed the possibility of Thailand exporting Thai Mahachanok mangoes to South Korea. Last year, Thai mango exports to South Korea totaled 600 million baht, which makes South Korea Thailand’s number 1 buyer of the juicy stone fruit.
