PHUKET: -- The leading project engineer for the construction of the Sam Kong Underpass hopes to complete the project within two weeks, weather permitting.

“The project has been delayed again due to recent heavy rain, and we pushed back the opening date to the end of August,” Chalermpon Wongkietkun, Project Engineer from the Highways Department told The Phuket News this morning (Aug 19).

“If work is not disrupted any further by heavy rain or floods, we should hit our August 31 deadline,” he said.

Workers this week opened the northbound slip road onto Phra Phuket Kaew Rd, which heads west into Kathu, after resurfacing the road there.

“Motorists can use the side road to turn left onto Phra Phuket Kaew Rd and make a u-turn if they want to continue head north toward the airport,” Mr Chalermpon.

“We have posted a sign by the northbound lanes of the bypass road to let people know they can go use the side road,” he added.

the side road in the picture is finished..

i drove over it yesterday, a shatshow, the only thing they took care of is the sidewalk, the road is uneven and dangerous. These drain holes will likely end up as massive potholes soon.

Maybe just the initial layer of asphalt- they often do a second layer to bring it up to the correct level and to a better standard of finish. Being done in Kalim today.

Be aware on the coast road to Kamala they are knocking down big rocks just prior to the big slope running down to Naka Police box.

Also 3 new sets of pedestrian lights in Bang Tao-  very easy to miss.

One time their predicated date of completion is really going to happen (more or less, because I don't expect they won't be finishing the 'details' for months after that). I'm really looking forward to that date.

most jobs yes, but this company's workforce are old ladies in large hats with broomstick. There's no one actually qualified to make a road. They follow instructions from a manual with absolutely no real world clue.

For a newly constructed underpass, the finishing is awful; it looks like it's been there for years.

How long before the first closure for repairs?

err, its nowhere near finished, so the finishing is a moot point at this stage

'old ladies in large hats with broomsticks' - nonsense

My office is next to this underpass, and although I know its going to be nowhere near totally complete in two weeks, they are going hammer and tongs on it at the moment.

One would hope they are going to put asphalt over the disgraceful concrete finish which is there now but that is no excuse as it is not hard to level & smooth off a concrete slab before it hardens.

And it's not hard to wash out a plastic mixing tub at the end of the day ... but no ... the workers walk away and spend a noisy 10 minutes banging out the old hardened mix.  Just no advance thought ... but hey the workers don't get paid enough for advance thought.
