Thailand approves cyber plan, including offense for deterrence

By Shaun Waterman

The move to get cyber deterrence capabilities comes on the heels of Chinese cyberattacks last month against several of Thailand's neighbors

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's military-appointed government approved a draft national cybersecurity plan Monday that calls for offensive online military capabilities — highlighting the fast-growing number of nations developing offensive cyber weapons and units in a volatile region roiled by hacktivism and Chinese maritime territorial claims.

The draft master plan for national defense against cyber threats for 2017-21 was approved by Thailand's Defense Council at a meeting chaired by the defense minister, Ministry Spokesman Maj. Gen. Kongcheep Tantrawanich said, according to the Bangkok Post.

The spokesman added that the plan is in line with the ministry's cyber strategy for national defense, approved by the Defense Council on Feb 29.

Was this master plan planned by master minds?

...without a Spell Checker

So will the ministry still be using the illegal copies of Windows 7 or will they get the new illegal copies of Windows 10?

If "Anonymous" can cyberattack Thai government offices at will, then what hope does the military have trying to stop the ultra sophisticated Chinese hackers?

Who would have thought (Dr. Who that is)! Fine in principle, but hardy likely to be much of a deterrent until they engage more offensive cybermen!

Just ignore everything in this article.  It's a pipe dream.  It sounds good on paper (to themselves) but Thailand will only ever pose as much threat in the cyber realm as they do in the physical realm.  Yay!  They can hack Laos!

Will their efforts ever pose a threat to China?  Nope.  US?  No.  EU?  No.

The only thing they'll be capable of is producing a cadre of script kiddies who learn just enough while working for the government to be able to go buy off the shelf hacking tools and try to steal money from people.

When you start getting grammatically incorrect emails telling you that you need to change your Baclay or Brank of Amerlica password, you will know that Thailand's cyber warfare program has reached its zenith.

Yes, everything - including sniffing a smelly old sock - can be called a part of 'national security' - if the Wise One so deems it!
