BANGKOK: -- Major Chalermchai Matchaklam who has been on parole for 11 months is likely to be sent back to prison to serve the rest of his jailterm for breaking parole conditions.

The former army officer who was convicted for the murder of Mr Preena Leepattanapant, Yasothon governor, in 2001, was arrested by Crime Suppression Division police in front of a housing estate in Wang Thong Lang district on Thursday following a complaint that he allegedly extorted money from someone in Chanthaburi.

Justice deputy permanent secretary Kobkiart Kasiwat said Thursday that the ex-major broke parole conditions by leaving Bangkok without prior permission from parole officer.

He added that initial investigation confirmed that Chalermchai committed extortion in Chanthaburi and, for that matter, the latter was likely to be sent back to jail to serve the remaining two years and nine months jailterm.

Mr Kobkiart further said that the 11-month parole period was a complete waste of time – which means the period will not be deducted from the rest of the jailterm.

I remember all the news videos at the time of his detention and was convinced his lift didn't go all the way to the top as he was laughing insanely and clowning around.

At the time all the army did was complain of the insult to them because he had been arrested and shown in uniform.

"Chalermchai Matchaklam who has been on parole for 11 months is likely to be sent back to prison..."

Not quite the same thing

More dishonesty in news reporting:

Here's the headline:

"Former Red Guar leader sent back to jail for breaking parole conditions"

And here's the reality:

BANGKOK: -- Major Chalermchai Matchaklam who has been on parole for 11 months is likely to be sent back to prison to serve the rest of his jailterm for breaking parole conditions.

Spot the difference? It's getting harder and harder every day just to plough one's way through the BS and pro-regime propaganda.

So has he been charged with extortion ?

Or does he just do the remaining time?

Shouldn't be seen as part of a breach of parole but as a new charge and any jail time added to his current sentence with the fact he was on parole seen as an aggravation.
