pieeyed
Does anyone have any experience with insuring a car after a motor change from a V6 to a 4.0 liter V8? I was looking at a car that has the motor changed to a Toyota 1UZFE 4.0 liter V8. Was wondering is it even possible or would one have to pay a large sum of money because the engine is over 3.0 liters. The car is a 1996 BMW 525ia. Thanks in advance. Kwasaki
The Gov compulsory insurance will be cheap. Seriously if the book is all in order with correct chassis & engine numbers what l would do is get some quotes, plenty of ins companies to enquire online to. tomtaylor1
Hi All, my Mazda RX8 has a 2 liter turbo charged engine, showed the book to my insurance company, they said you only have insurance no 3, so no problem. The Viriya insurance. Regards Tom
Pdaz
Think you may find it hard to get first class insurance on a vehicle older than 10 years. If you just want third party it shouldn't be a problem.

C5VETTE
There is no secret, we called 3 insurance company and they said no problem. I also been told in the past when I started to look for a "classic car" that it is impossible but was told by previous owner of my car that he had 1st class insurance. So therefore we called 3 companies for quotes and they said no problem. Maybe the secret is to check with more than one source. Also could be depending on how your car is registered. If it is a "grey import" with changed VIN then I could guess it could be hard.

Pdaz
It may well be possible. But both my BMW (42 yrs old) and my Audi (16 yrs old) were officially imported cars from the main dealer. I checked with several insurance companies both Thai and Foreign but had the same reply. I did think it silly but their attitute was cars are old and parts are hard to find so third party is all we offer. Don't know what a rich Thai with a classic Porsch or Lambo does ? So maybe specialist insurance is available at a price ?

Sri Ayudhya Insurance Viriya Insurance Don't remember 3rd Went with Sri Ayudhya. They had mentioned to wife that it the car was 1st class from beginning then you could continue to get it when the car get's older. Only thing is that you don't get full value for your car. You get the normal 1st class coverage for 3rd party etc. And it's not cheap. Also been told that the max coverage for any car is 5 milj baht so that's what a new Ferrari etc is insured for. Don't know if this is correct though.

C5VETTE
The insurance I got is full 1st class coverage including accident, fire, theft etc. The only thing they deducted due to the age of the car was the value of my car which they reduced to a bit lower than half. I'm happy with that. I can afford to loose my car but don't like to end up cost for others etc. If you look at their web site they call it Plan 1. They also offered Plan 2+ at a lower cost but it pay less for both my car and 3rd party etc.

pieeyed
Thanks everyone for the replies and experiences so far. I think 3rd class insurance would probably be good enough for this set of wheels.

They are only worth millions if you can get someone to pay it. Most classic/ vintage vehicles are overvalued by their owners. Probably true for the E-type, but a 1991 Beemer? overherebc
Re changing the engine and insurance. Does anyone have a clear idea of what paperwork has to be supplied with the car when you change the engine number in the blue book ? Does this have to be supplied when you take the car for it's yearly 'MOT' check or, does the paperwork only have to be supplied when the car is sold and owners name changed ? If the replacement engine is the same as the original, make, size, HP etc does that enter into the equation for registration at MOT time or is notifying the insurance enough? A couple of beer rounds are hanging on the answers.

You should update book and inform insurance company of the new engine number as soon as possible. Edited August 29, 2016 by Don Mega

To my knowledge no. only need invoice which must state engine number and VAT paid. for imported engine would also need paperwork to show import taxes and duties have been paid.
