Cambodia and Thailand agreed to resolve illegal logging issues along the border after a bilateral meeting of foreign ministers in Bangkok last week. Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said in a press release on Tuesday that the outcome of the August 25-26 visit was fruitful.

“For illegal logging, both countries agreed to implement measures to prevent the problem and to solve [cases of] illegal logging and wildlife poaching, and improve the sharing of information for investigations into cases of injury and death,” the report said. “The meeting also urged local authorities to use restraint with weapons on illegal loggers.”

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn on the second day of the visit that he would like to see a positive relationship between the two countries along the border. “We do not want to use weapons on illegal loggers along the border, but if weapons are used toward our police first, they need to protect themselves too,” Mr. Prayut said, according to the statement.
