Vientiane Visa Advice

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

Hope life is treating you well.

The time has come after nearly 4 years on a marriage visa to get back to Non-B visa (don't have spare 400k lying around).

The last time I have been to Vientiane was in 2010, so about 6 years ago. I wanted to ask you for any advice and what has changed? What should I be aware of? What is the best time to queue up at the embassy?

One more point to this story:

My university/school (work at Demonstration school that belongs and run by the university) processes and prepares all the documents for us.  I got my documents about a week ago, I decided to double check and I saw that there is a document needed for Criminal background check.  Long and behold my work place have never heard about it. I went to the criminal division in my small town, they said my workplace needs to make a request letter, which took 1 week to make. Now they said it will take 4 WEEKS to do the check. We called Bangkok division they said the quickest they can do is 2 weeks.

That is too late I only have about 6 days left on my visa. Two previous teachers who went to Vientiane said nobody asked them for this document.

What are your experiences with this?

Thank you.

To get more time you could apply for a 60 day extension to visit your wife.

If your income is  40k baht a month you could  use it to apply for the extension based upon marriage.

The police clearance is shown one the requirements shown  the Vientiane embassy website. See: http://vientiane.thaiembassy.org/upload/pdf/Visa/Non-B teacher.pdf

If teaching k-12 students, the school will require that you obtain a police clearance from your local police department. Please include the copy of the clearance letter (original you should present to the school in Thailand).

Ubonjoe, thanks for the help as usual.

Extension out of the question as I have already used it in the past and only 1 per visa is allowed. Salary unfortunately is not 40k, as government school rarely pay more than 30-35.

Now my question to you is this (why I think previous teachers were not asked for this document)

Even though I work at Demonstration School (which is a part of the university), my contract states that I'am hired as a "specialist" not teacher. Also the contract states that I'am employed and work at University (not school) there basically isn't anything there saying that I work at a school.

What do you think?

It seems you and other teachers would not need the police clearance because it would appear you are not teaching children that are in the k to12 grade range mentioned on the website that requires it.

Well actually we do teach M1 to M6 but that is not stated anywhere on contract or on papers.

The VERY best day to apply is on a Friday; the staff is very friendly, sometimes offer you a coffee ! And there is basically no other visa-runners, as they have to stay in Vientiane until Monday to pick up the Visa. Good Luck !!

Why Vientiane?  Unless you live very close to there easy driving distance I'd avoid the place.  Grab a cheap flight to Yangon, Saigon or Phonh Penh.  No queues at all and IMO more pleasant cities to waste two days in that Vientiane.
