Scouse123
I remember many years ago a certain Royal request being made by a foreign dignitary/ diplomat to Maggie Thatcher regards how they went on about stopping traffic in London as a certain Royal was on their way to the airport. Her answer was ever so British but firm..She said, " No, no my dear, we don't do that here! " in a motherly tone. As another poster said, A helicopter would make far better sense for speed, not wasting peoples work time and helping the horrendous traffic jams on the roads. There are far too many VIP convoys for little despots with delusions of grandeur in Asia and Africa anyway.

They have to do this, because most drivers here are not known for being courteous and stopping to let someone out. It is not a case of the security guard thinking the driver is more important, just that they are helping them out. Sounds like you are the one with the case of self-importance and entitlement. I'm very sorry. Have I hurt your feelings? 'Most drivers' are not known for being courteous? I think my feelings have been hurt also. Have you ever considered that you're wrong? How about we all consider we might be wrong before telling others they might be wrong. Opinions are subjective. I never said the security guards were not trying to genuinely help. I focused on this idea of feeling special or important. That was my whole point. As for my self-importance, I merely believe in 'right of way'. If someone can't wait 5 seconds for me to pass as I am walking, why should I have to stop and do the same? Hence the idea of 'right of way'. It kinda makes sense. subjectively speaking, of course. Wouldn't wanna offend anyone by calling it logic.

I just pointed out that the security guards in the Malls, apartments etc. maybe aren't as you made them out to be. And ironically you do come across as someone with a lot of self-importance... kind of funny really

If you've ever seen a security guard, motorcycle taxi rider, etc, helping a car come out of their house or onto a main road, there's this feeling of importance. I am pointing out that there is no feeling of importance, that it is just someone pulling out and getting help.... not hard to understand

Waiting for a moment to let someone pass is called politeness, seemingly an alien concept to you. In fact, you appear to have been too long in Thailand and have absorbed the 'Me First' attitude of the locals.

When I drive out onto the main road, I make sure the foot passengers are clear and then 'I' go. It's called being considerate and not thinking 'cos I'm in a car and bigger that I can do whatever I like. As a person in a car, you have to be considerate of people walking. And does THAI still have a separate check-in desk for MPs, so they won't have to queue with the peasants? Disgusting. However, not all escorts speed their way through. I once had the tough task of taking care of the Russian tennis player Anna Kournikova when she visited Thailand. We had a police escort from the airport in Bangkok to Pattaya, but they kept to the speed limit which added quite some time to the journey late at night. You lucky lucky lucky b*st*rd! I remember watching her play Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 1999, (on the telly I hasten to add). I had to lie down in a darkened room afterwards! sharecropper
It's never going to stop, and they'll never use helicopters, as it is a form of insidious Social Control - letting the rubbish know who's Boss and who's important.
scorecard
10 hours ago, HOOD Robin said: " people are getting sick of it " ?? NO WAY ! On the contrary... For the average Thai it is all normal, part of daily life, part of their buffalo culture... EVERY day, Morning AND Evening, the intersections of all big and small sois that leads to Sukhumvit Rd, are closed for traffic for more than 30 min just because a "VIP" has to pass there. Then first police car with VERY HIGH SPEED and sirenes ON, 1 min later another one, and another and another.... After 8 - 10 police cars has passed with an interval of 30+ seconds, the VIP car passes with HIGH SPEED surrounded by some other "important cars"... Then again a bunch of noisy police cars with very high speed and then, finally, people are allowed to enter or cross Sukhumvit Rd. They are all politely and patiently waiting, showing respect as it is all part of this CIRCUS SHOW. Oh, the most ridiculous thing is... by the time that VIP car passes, that first noisy and speedy police car is already 10 kms further !!! i really have no words for this... They just dont understand that all none Thais find this very annoying and disturbing when have to wait for such nonsens... But then again, what do they care about what the farang think eeh ?? Actually 20 - 25 years ago it was much worse, many businessmen and rich / self important folks had bars of flashing lights fitted across the roofs of their cars and many also with loud speaker systems fitted. No approval to fit the lights and speakers, they turned them on whenever they felt like it and forced / intimidated their way through the traffic and the police too frightened to stop them. You still see this (the flashing lights anyway) every once in a while. A couple of years ago it started getting popular again but they cracked down. But they are still out there.
