Gonzo the Face
Reported in this mornings English language newspaper, 4 cases of Zika in Chiang Mai. Let me just list some things as I understand them to be: Zika is borne and transmitted by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed and reproduce in areas where open/standing water is prevalent. Chemical spray is recommended to rid an area of open water of mosquito larvae/eggs. One of the largest areas of open water in CM is the River Ping . Back some years ago the gov't used to spray for mosquitoes up and down the river once or twice a year. This has not been done for 8 - 10 years or more now. This Zika threat has been around for some months now and has been reported as a serious health threat. Why has the gov't not sprayed the river then????? Sparkles
Our village was sprayed a few weeks ago from a motor bike and sidecar chugging along the soi. A chemical cloud drifted into our front and back garden while we closed all windows until the air was clear. Result................achieved absolutely nothing, the mosquitoes were still buzzing around at dusk especially under the mango tree. To fog successfully it would need to be done from close quarters ie around the house, not from the soi.Well intentioned but a total waste of money. Regarding the Ping mossies like to breed in still, not flowing water, the amount of small klongs ,dams ,ponds, water courses, open drains as well as the Ping make it almost mission impossible. Dengue outbreak a few years back was far worse although the future who knows ? part of living in the tropics

Gonzo the Face
Other than talk, has anyone seen any effort by the gov't [ local, prov. or any] spraying, fogging or anything, to aid in Zika Mosquito control or eradication?

Aussie69
Apparently the mosquitoes are very poor fliers so they are low to ground, so keep your feet up from ground if sitting outside. Also use a fan, they cant fly into the airstream. The virus is spread from person to person, the mosquitoes are only the transmitter, they have to bite an effected person then bite you to spread it.
