PHUKET:-- Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada today confirmed that the Highways Department has decided on the route the planned 12-lane expressway from Koh Kaew to Phuket International Airport costing B5.5 billion will take.

Governor Chamroen announced the route at a public meeting held at Phuket Rajabhat University today (Sept 6).

Present at the meeting were Phuket Provincial Office Chief Administrative Officer (Palad) Pakphom Intarasuwan and Phuket Chamber of Commerce President Surachai Chaiwat.

Highways Department Engineer Paisan Suwanrak explained at the meeting that the initial proposal to make the road four lanes wide each way had been expanded to now make the road six lanes each way.

The extra two new lanes each way will comprise one lane reserved for motorcycles, and one lane one each side of the expressway being reserved for bicycles.

“The road aims to ease traffic congestion to Phuket Town,” he said. “It will have will five overpasses, and will be 80 metres wide and 22.7km long.”

The route following the high voltage lines seemed like a good idea when it was proposed many years ago.  Thalang technical college to the bypass road near the Outlet Mall.  Needs to be an expressway with on/off ramps, no lights, and no shops to slow things down.  Pipe dream.

He had to go out with a bang, not a whimper didn't he! A 12 lane expressway in Phuket- the money will be in the feasibility study, not this pipe dream.

They'd need to dramatically increase the number of ambulances if this racetrack happened and it still doesn't address the matter of accessing the West Coast.

A road from Kathu to Kamala and the other over the hill road to Patong are what is needed; the basic routes already exist. Both would ease congestion along the present routes.

Its just a competition as to who can announce the most ambitious project.

Just waiting for the Thai space project announcement. Military government plans to colonize Uranus after creating sister city with locals. We have decided on this location as they seem to speak the same language.

The road will start near Thalang Technical College

Er.. right.  So what about the traffic congestion between the college and the airport, especially on the airport approach road lined with shops?

Actually not important, since this will all never happen

A 12 lane expressway and a light rail linking the airport to the south!

Will they compliment each other or compete for trade?

Which will be finished first, will either ever eventuate?

If an expressway is built, will it turn into a racetrack for souped up minivans?

Two dedicated motorbike lanes and two dedicated bicycle lanes! Are there really that many treadlies heading to the airport, and do they really need to be anywhere near an expressway? Perhaps  bicycle paths separate from the vehicles could be built in the precinct.

Or, is it all just about inventing projects because some infrastructure building money is finally flowing from Bangkok to Phuket?
