Sometimes, all they will accept is the original passport.  And for good reasons.

Their own pamphlet says a copy is ok

I do. The deal in current Thailand, especially Bangkok, is you either carry your passport or you can spend a night in the most uncomfortable accommodation that Thailand has to offer.

Yes, I know that you can hold a photocopy of your details page and your entry stamp/visa/permit page. But I know folks who have still had to spend some hours in aforementioned uncomfortable accommodation even though they has said photocopies.

Yes, it used to be the case that if you stayed out of places that were open after hours, avoided places where gambling, drugs or other illegal stuff was going on and you behaved yourself (did not get into fights, throw your cig buts on the ground or any "criminal" activity) you would never have to even show your passport to any authority figure. Alas, in the current climate you can be arbitrarily stopped on the street, as has happened to me. You can be a tourist enjoying yourself in a nightclub and be stopped (as a tourist, would you know when it is illegal for a nightclub to remain open for business?)

What a wonderful piece of overwrought BS.

The He current Bangkok being the one I've lived most of the last 10 years.  In Sukhumvit no less. And I got out, a lot, even on school nights.

Ive never carried my passport ever. As a recent concession to occasionally more intrusive local police I do now have a photo of the Passport Photo ID page together with a photo of the current stamp. I've been stopped or asked 3  times in 10 years. Once in the last 18 months, the other times years ago.

I was was talking to a senior soldier at Nana 3 weeks ago, the type senior enough to speak flawless English. He said photo of both those on your phone is more than enough. And that's the experience of all those I know that work in and frequent late night and even dodgy late night venues.

You are overplaying the issue mightily ...

Why exactly are the military in peacetime roaming the capital city and policing opening hours? In fact why are the military in peacetime outside the barracks at all?

because the police refuse to do the job as they are usually in receipt of  incentives to look the other way or havent you noticed that the military have been in on all the raids recently and surprise surprise they are actually catching them all where the police usually find nothing due to them being for warned.

I think the party in Bangkok has been over for a long time.  I barely go out anymore.  It is just not that much fun anymore.

The BKK nightlife could get stale for a lot of people, even before the junta.

Still, it certainly lost something during the 2014 curfew that was never fully regained.

It still is fun

These raids don't happen that often.

I was out until 6am on soi 11 on Friday night

There on Soi 11 but for the grace of the junta go you.

Only 10?

Does anyone take their passport with them on a night out in Bangkok?

I don't...

They really mean acceptable photo ID, and anyone who doesn't want to spend some time in immigration would be wise to carry some ID.

Sadly, they are not very good at communicating the laws.  And very poor at upholding the law.  This is Thailand.  Sometimes, a hard copy is all that's accepted.  If you are involved in a potential crime (being at a night club after hours, with illegal drugs around), it will probably be required.

A good question. Martial Law hasn't been initiated has it? Therefore the military should theoretically have no business or jurisdiction enforcing civilian laws.

But their again TiT and things are done their own sweet way. Besides, the BiB can't be bothered, are getting a backhander, or someone more senior is.

Our local BiB are actually pretty o k, friendly and do a good job most of the time in all fairness. Now they sometimes get "escorted" by very serious unfriendly looking men in green.

This is how it rolls in poor third world countries..if you don't like it ..you are always free to go to liberal, politically correct, human rights upholding Europe and America anytime :clap2:

Where the beer cost 4 Euros and girls 100 Euros for 1 hour and ohh yeah, you party with a cover charge , -10 degrees and crap vibe crowd...

This is needed to maintain the status quo....

Thai-Chinese are NOT stupid...

So what do really people want here..NO passport checking, No urine tests, No closing down venues and it becomes the mecca for illegal migrants, drug dealers and criminals.

The low life live in these areas..so with regular checks....it make sure that, no criminals can have their "FAVORITE HUNTING GROUND"....With frequent raids everyone are on the MOVE...

Criminals cannot just call buddies and say...lets just get drunk, sell drugs and steal in Climax tonight

I support this regular raids...keeps bad guys out...Climax has been raided before and its back as usual..

there are those greedy, shameless and unscrupulous people who want to make the extra buck by ignoring closure hours. two weeks suspension for such offences should set things right.

The only reason one falang was charge for failing pee test is he didn't have the extra 300 baht to pay fine on spot. Off to jail for him.

is that justice?

Before article 44, this might be misconstrued as martial law, but thanks to the nimble minds of the Thai military it has been called something else.  This is so people could purchase travel insurance when traveling to or through Thailand.

has it never occurred to you that you just aren't that much fun anymore?

If that's what they mean, they should say so.

I'm led to believe that it isn't always the case.

That said always worked for me to have a photocopy of my passport...mind I don't get into much trouble these days.

I've got a laminated copy in my wallet and a picture on my phone.  With visa stamps.

that is very practical and handy.

They should regulate the late night venus.
Many like to celebrate long parties.
A metropolis without vibrant nightlife, is boring.
The early curfew (introduced by Taksin) at 1-2am should be abolished

Depends on if you end up in jail or not.  As some have.

There was a time when they were cruising Thong Lor.  2-3k baht if you didn't have your physical passport on you.  Rare, but it happens.

i suppose their decision would have been final even though the pamhlet clearly says that a photocopy is acceptable.

Well all that will happen is everyone will take a drive down to pattaya and spend their hard earned cash at Insomia or Marine disco instead.
All night late night discos are essential for keeping punters OFF the streets. Lets not forget all the Sukumvit all night licensed street bars that obviously have been paying their bills on time.
Hilary has for a long time had the police in her pocket but it seems now the Army want a piece of the pie too.

If anyone hasn't yet figured this out- the Junta is intent on cleaning up Bangkok's nightlife. The military conducts the raids because they want to make sure a place is actually raided. As one poster indicated- Bangkok in general as well as Pataya have lost their allure. Many places are up for sale and many have been sold . Unfortunately, the buyers will face more of the same- not enough customers and a dwindling customer base.Instead of lowering prices because of the downturn they insist on keeping prices way too high and then increasing them again- leading to more loss of business. Climax and those like it won't be around too much longer along with Nana and Cowboy. The new sheriff doesn't care for these type of places and the customers are going to other countries for cheaper entertainment.
