Scott
You are correct about 'massively illegal', and I should have used something to effect of rising 'to the level of' a chargeable offense and would anything she did have ultimately excluded her from obtaining permission to stay in the US. Was there a deliberate attempt to lie, violate the conditions of her entry or to cover up the truth. Immigration paperwork is long and somewhat complicated and along the way there are likely to be errors, a wrong date here or there a typo on a document etc.. If there is an error and it's found, can it be explained? With Obama it would be difficult to charge him for something his mother may have done. A Thai friend who immigrated to the US a few years back, had a question arise on his immigration paperwork. A name which appeared on a document was different than what appeared on the birth certificate and on the passport. His parents changed his name when he was young twice. He only knew of one name change. He had signed the immigration paperwork and sworn it was true. It wasn't. It took a call back to Thailand and a trip by a relative to the local Amphur to get the documents. Case closed. Whether there is an investigation is a matter of what you want to call an investigation. When a name starts surfacing in the news, then any prudent bureaucrat is going to check the file and make sure all the paper work is in order at that they are not caught with their pants down. I am pretty sure that the hospital that had Obama's birth certificate took a look to make sure everything was in order. Whether it remains an internal affair or goes to a formal investigation would depend on which law enforcement agency might have information that would show that she deliberately misrepresented herself. If he hadn't been so vociferous against immigrants being in the USA illegally this would have blown over. But it's very possible that if Trump is elected in November that the new first lady could have broken immigration laws to enter the USA...not a very good situation. The only way to fully clear up the issue is for Melania to release her visa documents. The longer she resists doing so the more likely it is that she's hiding something. You're simply guessing. Obviously none of us knows the answer to this right now.
Credo
I think the basic question which would reflect on Trump is if there is anything in her records that he knew was incorrect or illegal and supported in the immigration process.
