NARATHIWAT: -- An Army's Huey helicopter with six soldiers on board crashed into a grass field in Narathiwat province this morning, injuring four of them.

The US-made helicopter was on the way from Taksinrajanives Palace to pick up senior army officers to visit a ranger base in Ra-ngae district when it developed the trouble and could not be controlled.

The incident happened at 08.30 am today.

As the helicopter was about to land at a special task force base in Muang district of Narathiwat, it spinned out of control and crashed on the ground and caught fire.

This country must have the most helicopter accidents in the world each year or at least it seems that way. Havent they heard of maintenance?

Have a look at t this list of military aircraft and helicopter crashes worldwide from 2010 until September 2016 and count the number of Thai crashes compared to the rest of the world.

helicopters need to be stripped check for wear stress fractures and rebuilt after a set number of flying hours. preventative maintenance is not so common from what i have seen around thailand.

Song by Queen . Another one bits the dust.

Their flying Vietnam era Huey's!

Otaining parts must be very difficult so they have to be machine made here.

Proper scheduled maintenance on a helicopter is extremely expensive and time-consuming.

The last thing I would fly in is a 40+ year old helicopter.

Many crashes can result from poor maintenance, defective parts, and extreme weather.

Many countries are operating UH1Hs and quite successfully. Parts are not too dificult to obtain as cannibalisation is common. Seems the majority of Thai helo incidents are caused through pilot error and not maintenance.

They buy airship blimps, fake bomb detectors, submarines they don't need, an aircraft carrier that is a waste of space yet they can't upgrade a fleet of ageing, dangerous Hueys from the Vietnam War?

Maybe there should be immediate civilian oversight of the Military and Services' budgets. They are clearly incompetent.

Did Prayut take a detour on the way to Phuket?

Wait for the high speed train

Any time you can walk away from a helicopter crash is a very fortunate day.

This is a success story and I am glad for the survivors. Time for them to go buy lottery tickets.

The pilots lost control of the helicopter that spun round when it was landing. The four escaped before the helicopter exploded and caught fire.

So the appropriate song should be:-
Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)

Please stop saying things like " helicopter crash "  when in fact it was an uncontrolled hard landing!  :D

The repair shop guys will have it flying again in next to no time.

Funny.

I had originally typed "hard landing" based on the news article but after seeing the smoke and flame I deleted and called it a crash.

wow! remind me never to fly in a helicopter

I am surprised that they still have some. I live here now 9 years and every year 3-4 crash, gone lost or something else.

So was that the last chopper?  At the frequency they fall out of the sky there can't be any left.

There does seem an uncommon number of 'pilot error' helicopter crashes here. I worry when they frequently fly over Bangkok at an altitude of only 500 feet or less. The minimum height over the majority of worlds cities is 1500 feet regardless of them being military, commercial or private operators. This is so if there is a malfunction to give the pilot a chance of getting down outside a built up area.

Ummm..........what does "maintenance" mean?  :whistling:
