Valid Thai Driver's License and a US State Driver's License close to expiring.

Scenario: A person on a retirement visa has obtained and initial Thai driver's license using the required documentation including a valid US State driver's license. After about two years living in Thailand, the person's state driver's license expires. However, the Thai driver's license is still valid for the next three years.

To renew the Thai driver's license before the five years is up, would the expat need to include a valid US State driver's license as well?

I see this as a problem when a person has to return to America and renew the state driver's license and no longer have a mailing address.

I don't recall anyone having to supply the original foreign driving qualification when renewing an existing 5-year Thai DL. However, your thread claims this US person "has obtained and initial Thai driver's license" which must be a 1-year 'provisional' Thai DL but goes on to comment on the early renewal of a 5-year Thai DL?

Why the early renewal? If it is to be able to use the US state DL license as provenance before it expires, the latter is not required. Per the above, if you let the 5-year Thai DL run its course and renew at the end of the 5 years, the original, foreign DL should not be required. maybe mention what Land Transport office you will be using for your renewal since some may have differing policy on renewals, just like different immigration offices do.

Can the US state DL be renewed on line?

Retaining a home address is more and more important these days. As a Brit, I don't live in the UK any more but I still have one. I don't live in the US anymore either but have two addresses over there.

For renewal the US licence is not required, it may even be confusing.

Just confirming.

After having converted a foreign DL to a Thai DL the foreign DL is no longer relevant for renewal.

Thanks.............That answers the question.

Thanks for clarifying the initial 1 year Thai DL followed by a 5 year Thai DL not requiring a valid US State DL. Certain states implemented online renewal for DLs. However, a mailing address residing in the state is required for renewal (at least for the State of California). Unless you are situated with an extended family in your home country, it would be easy to establish a home address. I do not have that advantage of an extended family to establish one. All I have is my residence that I will sell before the move abroad. Presently, I am at the planning stage.

Don't need a US license anymore. Don't need it to renew your Thai license. You can drive and rent car in the US with your Thai license.

The Main Prob with a Thai Licence in the U.S. is if you get a pull, the Cops always have a Brother who served in Nam and want to know about Soi Cowboy .:shock1:

I'll ask his brothers name as I might know him as I was in Vietnam.

New Zealand, South Korea and Thailand also had soldiers who fought in the war. A lot of the Thais were working with the CIA in Laos.

Re-confirmed. I renewed mine recently. All I needed was a letter from immigration confirming my address, a medical certificate, my passport and my expiring Thai licence. My UK one had expired 3 months previously, but that was irrelevant as it was not needed.
