Having checked online forums and visited several eyeglass shops in Bangkok, I learned that attempting to repair eyeglasses -- my problem was a broken metal frame -- normally ends up with the shop trying to sell you a new pair or new frame. With the help of a Thai friend I found an eyeglass repair shop that has its own lab to do all kinds of repairs -- mine took ten minutes and cost 150 baht.

 

The repair shop is Tachang Optic and it's in the shop mall connected to the Tha Chang pier on the Chao Praya river. You can reach it via the river by the local boat to Tha Chang pier, or the tourist boat to Maharaj pier and walk five minutes on the main road, or you can reach it by road (it's near the Grand Palace). The sign is on top with big orange Thai characters; the phone number is 089 155 1216.
