Police: 5 shot, 1 dead, after fight at Illinois campus party
DAVID MERCER, Associated Press

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — One man was killed and four other people were wounded in a pair of shootings early Sunday, including one that happened on the University of Illinois campus.

Police believe the two shootings in the eastern Illinois city of Champaign may be related. They say the first apparently stemmed from an argument shortly after midnight at an apartment party on Green Street, the commercial heart of the campus.

"Our preliminary investigation completely points to an argument taking place at the party and the argument spilled out into the street and that's when a fight occurred," Champaign police spokeswoman LaEisha Meaderds said, adding the reasons for the fight aren't clear yet.

Shots were fired as the fight escalated, striking four people, she said.

One of those shot, 22-year-old George Korchev, was killed, Meaderds said. She said Korchev, who was from the Chicago suburb of Mundelein, wasn't involved in the fight and wasn't a University of Illinois student. He just happened to be walking by when the shots were fired. The other three were taken to a hospital for treatment of what police called non-critical gunshot wounds.

Less than half an hour later, police received a report of another shooting a few blocks west of campus. Officers found a victim, who was taken to a hospital and treated for a non-critical wound. Police later said that three of the four surviving victims were discharged from the hospital. The fourth remains in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are searching for a suspect or suspects in the shootings and for the driver of a vehicle that struck someone who was running away from the gunfire at the first scene. That person's injuries were minor.

It isn't clear how many people were at the party because many ran when the gunfire began, Meaderds said. Police are hoping to find and speak to as many as possible.

Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen said in a statement Sunday that city and university police were working together to aggressively pursue all leads.

I guess people must become a bit blasé about shootings in the US since they seem to happen every day. But it's sad to read about someone getting killed walking along the street minding his own business. And only 22 years old. RIP.

Gun culture. Look at You Tube, Americans are obsessed with guns.

Very few are but most are not obsessed.

We are talking about 100,000,000 gunowners in the US so its actually a small minority constantly making headlines.

So that is a SMALL minority 555555

Population    324,227,000

0–14 years    19.4%
15–64 years    66.2%
65 and over    14.4%

That would be ruffly 50% of all people 15-64 years old :-)

Personally, I think you are almost negligent if you don't have a weapon for self-defence, especially if you are White. It's not paranoia, but empirical data that suggests Whites have been a target of violent crime for quite some time.  Black lives matter just has a better storyline and publicist.

I am sorry but I have no idea what your post is attempting to say.

This is a preview of what the campus will look like once those morons will legalize guns there.

As repeated multiple times : more guns = more gun shooting, more death, more road rage killing, more drunk brawl killing, ....even if facts, numbers and EVERYTHING show more guns = more death  we will still hear the morons coming back with "but the cars kill.."

That  50% of all people 15-64 years old is not a small minority .

It is not even by definition a minority

And you could argue that giving 15 year old guns would be some what a bad idea any how.

OK Gotcha.

But my point was that the vast majority of gun owners are not obsessed and I don't personally know one that has any desire to shoot people. They just want to protrct themselves from those statistically few that are obsessed with killing people.

I'm not a native English speaker so I might have misread you post (if so sorry), I had it you told us that 100 000 000 was a small minority.

And that sounded a bit funny to me.

My sincere apology.

My post was poorly written.

Cheers
