Sokha Urges Calm, Wants Negotiations

Featured Replies

Kem Sokha, acting leader of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), yesterday urged party activists and opposition officials to avoid inappropriate political messages and other verbal attacks during the remaining days of the Pchum Ben holiday, hoping the ruling party will agree to resume negotiations . The call was made after Prime Minister Hun Sen last week said he would not talk about politics during the 15-day holiday period, telling a crowd he wanted to calm the situation and see which politician attacked him first.

Via a Facebook post yesterday, Mr. Sokha appealed to party leaders at all levels and activists to avoid using violence, offensive words or any means of attack that could affect the atmosphere of the traditional Buddhist holiday. Mr. Sokha, who was sentenced to five months in prison earlier this month for refusing to appear in court as a witness, told youth supporters on Sunday that it is time for the ruling party to resume the “culture of dialogue” and not waste any more time, saying politicians should take their supporters into consideration.

“The party wants peaceful change through elections, despite wins or losses to any party. It’s time to talk and value each other. We must solve problems for the next generation,” he said. CNRP president Sam Rainsy, on the other hand, struck an entirely different tune, criticizing the current ruling leaders of corruption during a video press conference.
