Is it a sign of some lack of Minerals? I am 60+ I have taken Vitamin & Mineral supplements quite regularly but not at Present Grateful for any advice Bill I've observed the same on my fingernails since my late 30s (I'm now 56)...it's intermittent with 2 - 3 nails becoming corrugated then growing out to become the beautiful pearls that they usually are. I've asked a number of GPs about this over the years and no one seems to be able to give me a straight answer. My nails are real thin and tear easily...how about you? awaiting the wisdom of thai-visa... Edited November 27, 200619 yr by tutsiwarrior
November 27, 200619 yr Maybe some sort of fungal infection?? My husband had something similar once on one nail and it was a fungus. He got some solution from a pharmacy and it cleared up. The other thing you could try which is completely natural is tea tree oil. It is available from Body Shop.
November 27, 200619 yr Error----keyboard out of control I use Tae tree Oil...cost a fortune in UK but well worth it. Fixes everything Edited November 27, 200619 yr by OneeyedJohn
November 27, 200619 yr I get the same on my nails, mainly on my big toe or thumbnails. A doctor once told me they are caused by times of stress or diet changes. In my case he is right. I can count the number of times I go on holidays just by looking at the lines across my big toenail.
November 28, 200619 yr Changes of appearance in fingernails can tell a great deal about a persons health. Useful link below; Finger Nail Abnormalities
November 28, 200619 yr I agree it is very possibly a fungal infection. Lamisil is the best way to treat a nail fungal infection. I don’t pretend to prescribe a form of action however I do want to point out that antifungal medications really do a job on your liver. If you are taking a prolonged course of antifungal medication you will need to have regular blood work done. That means no drinking while you are on the antifungal medication. You can also expect to be on it for 90 days as the nail must grow out.
November 30, 200619 yr Vertical ridges can indicate a tendancy to arthritis and/or deficiency of B vitamins/iron.
November 30, 200619 yr Author I am indeed grateful for all the advice here. But as a side issue ... I have been constantly troubled by Cracks in the skin between my toes which I have assumed to be Athletes Foot I have used Lamasil to clear it up but by then is usually on the other foot ****John K. - I have therefore - after bathing daily apply Lamasil - often to PREVENT its return - for more than the past year !!! I am not a regular drinker - but I do enjoy just a Glass of Beer with my Dinner sometimes. So your comments are very worrying !!! Even without the Beer - what could be happening to my Liver after one year of spreading Lamasil between the toes of both feet ... ??? Thanks again for the ready responses Edited November 30, 200619 yr by WilliamIV

The other thing you could try which is completely natural is tea tree oil. It is available from Body Shop. Presumably - Tea Tree Oil would not be a threat to my Liver ... But I saw some in a Health Shop - it says do not apply to Skin undiluted Is it OK to apply to Nails "UNDILUTED"? OR - what does one dilute it with? The Ridges on my nails are Lengthwise (NOT accross) Bill I am normally resident in Bangkok But currently on a Trip to India Edited November 30, 200619 yr by WilliamIV
November 30, 200619 yr Over the Past several monthsmy Finger nails have formed Ridges on the surface of all but 3 one has become "Corrugated" Bill It can certainly be a symptom of Arthritis, do you suffer from this? Apart from the ridges, are they going discoloured, lifting up off the finger or having creeping whiteness, when taken with the lifting can actually pull off. This is all symptomatic of Arthritis, but then the GP you saw should have recognized this, plus you would have some degree of pain. Moss
December 1, 200619 yr You can have the vertcal ridges as i do but not have arthritis. I have a family history of arthritis so i have taken preventive measures like eating fish oil and eating celery and steering clear of red meat.

Thanks again for the ready responses The lamisil tablets are the ones that could cause liver problems. The topical cream is just that topical. 250 mg Lamisil tablets go for about $8.25 each so both you and your wallet would know about them. I cant say for sure about your toes but if the problem is reoccurring I would look for the cause. Perhaps the types of shoes you wear or where you walk. You are describing a form of athletes foot. That is caused by walking on fungus often found in moist humid places such as a locker room shower area.
February 3, 200719 yr I know of 3 cases of curing nail fungus with natural apple cider vinegar. Braggs is available at Foodland. Do no refrigerate it and make sure it is the natural version with the "mother" included. Soak the nails daily and it takes quite a while to clear up but it will return your nails to a very healthy state.
February 5, 200719 yr Ridges on the nails can be a side symptom of Alopecia Areata, which is the loss of hair anywhere on the body - in patches, or total loss. I got AA around 6 years ago on the top of my head. Started with a small bald patch about the size of a 1 Baht coin and has now doubled in size. I also have some small patches in my beard. I'm lucky so far - some aa sufferers can lose all their scalp and body hair. I noticed that my finger nails became ridged around the same time as I noticed the patch - doctor said both are related.
