At least four people have died and two have reportedly gone missing following a helicopter crash offshore Cabinda, in Angola.

The helicopter was heading to the Tombwa-Lândana platform, operated by Chevron’s Angola subsidiary Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (CABGOC) when it crashed.

According to a report issued by Reuters, five passengers and one pilot were in the helicopter – two expatriates and four Angolans – although Angolan media sources are reporting all six passengers are confirmed dead.

Angola offshore crash: Chopper type ‘revealed’

 

Following a fatal helicopter accident offshore Angola on Monday in which four people died and two were missing, the helicopter’s type has been revealed. 

When it crashed, the helicopter was bound for Chevron-operated Tombua-Landana platform, offshore Cabinda, carrying five passengers and a pilot. Angola’s Angonoticias reported on Tuesday that all the six people had died; two expatriates and four Angolans.

A Chevron’s spokesperson told Offshore Energy Today on Tuesday that “search and rescue operations have been mobilized; currently, there are 19 marine vessels and three helicopters involved in the efforts”.

Helicopter Crash Victim Confirmed as Tenaris employee

Local authorities in Angola have confirmed that one of the victims from Monday's helicopter crash was an employee of Tenaris, a supplier of tubes and related services to the oil and gas industry.

José Capita was a field service specialist who started working for Tenaris in 2010. The 38-year-old Angolan citizen is survived by his wife and three children.

The Bell 430 helicopter departed the Malongo Terminal in Angola’s Cabinda province but did not reach its destination at the Chevron operated Tombua-Landana offshore facility. “The helicopter crashed in bad weather en route to a Chevron platform,” Captain Armando Nzawisa of the Angolan Armed Forces told AFP, a Nigerian news outlet. The Angolan Armed Forces are conducting the rescue operation for the crash.

Angola heli crash: One worker still missing

 

U.S. oil company Chevron is still searching for a worker who went missing after the helicopter carrying six people crashed offshore Angola over a week ago. Five bodies have been recovered so far.

The helicopter was carrying five passengers and a pilot to Chevron’s Tombua Landana platform off Angola, when it crashed last Monday.

Four bodies were recovered soon after the accident, with two workers missing at the time. The body of one of the two missing workers was found on Sunday.
