BANGKOK: -- The 900 million baht longest road tunnel to ease traffic congestion, the Mahaisawan Tunnel, officially opened today for traffic after almost five years of construction.

The tunnel is 800 metres long and built to allow traffic from the left bank of the Chao Phraya river or the Thonburi side to enter the right bank or Bangkok more conveniently.

The longest road tunnel was on the surface and underground parallel to the Taksin road which intersects with Ratchapisek road for a distance of 1.5 kilometres. The underground length of the road tunnel however is 800 metres long.

The 4-lane tunnel, with the height and width of 5 by 17 metres, begins at Soi Taksin 35/2 and ends in front of the Phra Pinklao Hospital.

But the road tunnel is not yet 100% finished but still needs some decoration and asphalt surfacing.

According to the Department of Public Works, Town and Country Planning (DPT) of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, said the tunnel is 98 per cent completed.

The unfinished part will involve final checkup to ensure that the structure, electric system, lights, and ventilation are working smoothly, as well as cleaning.

I am insinuating that they will replace old dead lamps with new dead lamps.

OIC.

My initial comment comes from several such tunnels where a large number of the internal lamps have failed (many years ago) and never been replaced.

Ultimate point - no planned maintenance? planned checking never done? etc.
