BRUSSELS: -- Efforts are to be made to revive Afghanistan’s stalled peace process following nearly four decades of conflict, the EU’s Foreign Policy Chief says.

Up to 90 countries and organisations attended talks in Brussels aimed at raising some 3.6 billion euros per year to help fund the country through to 2020. Meanwhile, regional powers agreed to try to work towards peace and reconciliation.

“So the main objective of today’s conference is that we commit to support Afghanistan at or near the current levels until 2020,” said Foreign Policy Chief, Federica Mogherini.

“Change does not happen overnight, but change does happen over time. And we all have a responsibility to support this change in Afghanistan, in the region and in the International arena.”

Fifteen years after the US helped drive the Taliban from Kabul, the militant group is rebounding. The financial support sought will come hand-in-hand with ongoing military backing from NATO.
