Concerns over cut in number of academics on board

THE sudden birth of the country's new super-research body has brought hope to some and concerns to others.

The National Council of Research and Innovation Policy (NCRIP) will function in place of the boards of three key existing organisations - the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), the National Science Technology and Innovation Policy Office (STI) and the National Innovation Development Committee.

NCRIP....yep...RIP.

Three thing matter:

1. Money: Sufficient GDP % for research (too low for decades) and strong incentives for 3rd party private sector funding.

2. People: Nuture, invest, facilitate, free up from admin mafia, make it an attractive career path.

3. Content balance: Fundamental and applied, focussed towards actual needs.

Address these three, with whatever committee titles etc are necessary, but just get on with it.

Upon formation it will split into ten committees and twenty subcommittees. The cost will be tenfold the combined cost of the three replaced organizations and less efficient. That seems to be the nature of the current regime.

Pretty much says it all... RIP Research indeed.
