russian control with a rather big buffer state between Moldova and Russia? and that 26 years after disintegration of the Soviet Union? yawnnnnnn...

Perceived. Did not say Russia actually controls Moldova.

You are aware that there are Russian troops in Moldova, and that the Transnistria issue is not settled, right?

The Moldovans need but to have a look around and see how similar scenarios panned out.

With your immense understanding of the region, I shouldn't have to point this out to you. Easily found out with a bit of research. Again, I was just there and was told this by the 4 different tour guides i had. I'll trust their judgment.

I hate to break in here but can I ask what could have possibly drove you to visit Moldova. Family, site seeing,  If you just like to travel the world I am jealous of you. My mother signed me up to a book collection of every country in the world at the time, I got about eight new ones every month, they had big colorful picture stamps that I would paste onto the appropriate pages, they described culture, religion, art, politics etc. I can't believe I didn't keep this collection, I had them all, including the smallest ones including the Vatican. I would guess that 20% of these countries have either been swallowed up or changed their names buy now.

Russia has zero desire to invade other countries. The US spews propaganda that Russia has imperial motives when it is the US that has proven its desire to march around the globe, destroy countries, and then brag about it while blaming Russia.

Russia's moves are all defensive. you cannot discuss Russia in a vacuum.

If so, then why is Russia in Eastern Ukraine? Georgia (where it bombed and killed innocent civilians not long ago)? Moldova?  Chechnya?

Putin is trying to regain territory lost. Defensive?  Seriously? Syria is far from defensive.

I Imagine both countries will want some serious money, military equipment or both. As Russia edges ever closer to tanking what with the oil  price free for all, there is no way they can. That said, why not get some free PR and put the scare out there  as they are approach bankruptcy  ... :D

I'm very aware of this agreement. From that article.

The base was just a part of the Crimean peninsula,  not all of it! LOL

Shortly after the (disputed) March 2014 accession of Crimea to the Russian Federation,[7] Russia unilaterally terminated the treaty on 31 March 2014.[8][9]

The Ukrainian territory of Crimea was annexed by the Russian Federation on 18 March 2014.

Yes, on March 31 2014 the Pact was terminated as it was no longer needed, Crimea voted to join Russia. You don't need a Pact like that with yourself.

Crimea's vote wasn't internationally accepted. If a part of a country wishes to join another, it should be up to the entire country,  not just one small part.  And not at the end of a gun. Crimea was taken. Just like parts of several other countries,  like Georgia.

I'm not saying the US is perfect, just trying to get the US haters to admit Russia isn't always perfect either. A hard job, so it seems.

P.S. I visited Moldova for the churches and the amazing wine cellars.  Spent the night in Transnistria,  where i saw the Russian tank. That part of Moldova was taken by Russia,  so obviously,  some there aren't happy. My guides friends lived in Crimea.  They lost their property as it's being given to Russians. Same thing that's happened to some in Moldova years ago.  Bad memories.
