AYUTTHAYA: -- About 50 troopers from the 11th and 25th cavalry battalions were on Sunday sent to Wat Kasatrathiraj Voravihara in Ayutthaya to lay sand bags to form a 400-metre long flood wall as water in the Chao Phraya river is steadily rising.

The new flood wall will form the second line of barrier after underground water from the rising river has seeped through the first line of barrier and flooded the the temple’s lawn measured at about 50 cm deep as of Sunday.

The abbot of the temple, Phra Ratthaninthrajarn, sought help from the army to strengthen the flood wall with the hope that it will be able to spare the monks’ lodgings and other important properties from flooding.

Tha Rua district chief officer Mr Vitit Pinnikorn, meanwhile, said that workers had stuffed water drains with sand bags to block water from Pasak river into the township but the attempt failed.

As usual the army, disliked by many posters on TVF, are tasked with helping the Thai people once again.

I'm certain someone of even medium intelligence could tell the difference between the body of men bloated by generals and widely regarded as one of the most corrupt mafia-like organisations in the country, and regular troopers blindly following orders - and that dislike for the former does not follow on to the latter.

Indeed .

If boys in green at the top had started water management projects 2 years ago minor hiccups now would be acceptable as know improvement being implemented. Currently nothing different than yinglucks flooding disaster ... Gross negligence and a wealthy loon at the controls ...

Sooooo...does that mean, nothing has been done, since the flood they blamed on YS, after she was in office for 2,5 months?

They had more than 2 years to do something, but I guess, low hanging fruits like umbrellas and lottery - tickets were a priority!

I take it that you have never been in the military.Very few military people "blindly follow orders" even in a conscript army. That is just the same as saying, for example, many people blindly follow the PTP, or the Democrats or any other non elected unit.

You have missed the point. The Army is there to serve and help the people. It is what they do the best no matter who is running them.

Did you ever see the police, the politicians or the local authorities rushing to help? They will be there at the first sign of publicity in their Burberry boots or whatever but you won't see them working 10 or 12 hours a day, soaked to the skin and tired out.

Most Thai people like the Army in its lower ranks but the upper echelon nowadays are interchangeable with common or garden politicians of whichever colour you wish to pick.

Very few politicians I can think of are trusted by the Thai people, especially in the rural areas because the people do understand that it doesn't really matter who is in charge, they will still get screwed over. They may get a few more crumbs from one side or the other but that is all.

In other areas, are they also installing sand bag barriers to protect ordinary people's home?  Or does Billd766 in I.D 3 above consider the monks to be ordinary "Thai people"?

Rural and forest monks are ordinary Thai people. City monks are less so. If you don't believe it look at all the monks who have and still are causing problems within the country and work out where their wats are.

I agree with you 100%.

However, how far back do you want to go with water management projects?

Before Prayuth there was Yingluck, Abhisit, Somchai, Samak, Surayud, Thaksin twice, Chuan, Chavalit, Banharn, Chuan again, Anand. That takes you back to 1992. There has been flooding in Thailand since long before all of them so who is responsible for the flooding now?

IMHO all of them because they all talked the talk but none walked the walk.

None of them put forward a 10 or 20 year plan for Thailand.

How many committees and sub committees have sat around tables and talked this to death over the past decades? How much time, money and opportunities have been wasted?

No politicians want long term plans just in case they are no longer in power when the project is finished and another party claims the credit and they get blamed for all the mistakes and cost over runs along the way.

Yes, many things have been done. Boreholes have been dug, storage ponds dug, many but not enough rivers, klongs and canals have been cleared of trash, water hyacinths etc but that is a years round job that doesn't get year round attention.

Flood barriers have been built in many places but flood water is a great equaliser. If a flood barrier blocks the way of the flood water it will flow on until the ends of that barrier and come in from the sides or back.
