What is going on with all the extra bureaucracy?

I went to post a parcel today and I had to give them my passport. Wouldn't accept a Thai driving licence. Then I went to get some money out of the bank and they demanded my phone number.

Never happened before.

 

Anyone have a clue as to why this is happening?

Hi TBL,

i may be wrong but I understand the move behind the post office ID thing was to prevent drugs and other such illegal stuff getting posted or to make it easier to catch any clown whose parcel got caught. I knew some guys who sent drugs to the UK by post for many years and never got caught ( or so their story goes) .

 

The signs Ng's have been up in our local post five for some time now and it applies to everyone without exception in theory.

 

As for the bank, afraid I have no clue. Probably just a bad day?

Several reports of the post office wanting a ID to send mail.

I always have to put my phone number on withdrawal or deposit slips at the  bank. Been doing it for years. If I forget to do it they mention it.

Just give them a fake number at the bank, or tell them you won't give it because it's a foreign number and very expensive...works every time for me...also i refuse to tell my address to the bank or give some hotelname.

 

I will look in their camera so they have my face filmed, that should be enough.

Thanks. They obviously assume a drug dealer is going to be stupid enough to use a real passport then.

Everything has to be x rayed ( I assume ), so anything illegal would be found anyway and the recipient countries police would be notified, so they would catch the culprit when they collected the parcel, but that would be true 20 years ago too.

I never gave a phone number on a bank transaction before, ever.

 

I don't like having to get my passport out so many times as it is more likely to get worn or damaged, and there was a recent case of someone being refused entry to a country because his passport was worn.

I use one post office regularly and never have to show my passport but see them often asking Thais for ID. However went to another branch last week and they wouldn't send without the passport. I ended up driving back to the regular.  I'll stick to my regular ! Saves time even if I'm on the other side of town.

 Well, you fell into the common trap of assuming there is some sort of logic or reason to what happens here.

Photograph your P/Port for the rare occasion you need it for other than travelling

Happens in any country in the world when a junta takes power. Bureaucracy goes through the roof.

I deposit my rent in the landlord's account at SCB Bank.

 

Every month for 3 years and always asked to write my phone number on the deposit slip. I have no problem giving it.

In the USA you need to write you drivers license # and phone # when depositing/cashing a check. Just fraud protection nothing to do with bureaucracy.

Over a certain weight passport or ID card is required by thai post this goes for farang or thai alike no discrimination.

Bank have always asked for phone number on withdrawl  slip no great shakes as they have my number anyway.

Same thing going on in many places, I would suspect - and terrorism might be the root cause. There is increasing regulation on wiring money from USA too... seems to be the age we live in and I expect it will get worse and more inconvenient.

Did a 90 day a few weeks ago and the IO started chatting me up. Asked me for my name. I replied "Are you kidding me?"  They have about 50 hard copies of my passport and I could see my whole profile on his computer screen.

So showing your passport takes what,10 seconds.You must be a hell of a fast driver.

Fair enough, but I was getting cash from my account. Never asked for it before.

However, whatever the reason I guess no one really knows why it has happened.

 

It seems part of a larger picture along with the snooper form.

ThAi post is very lazy, they also won't put a note in your mailbox if they have a parcel but you weren't home. Also they even don't pick up the phone at the biggest postoffice of BKK, my wife tried to call them 8 times last week. They will get a very bad name internationally soon, they kept my parcel for a month without letting me know it was in BKK.

Been same in our post office for a good few months now over a certain weight. It may well have been the teller last week couldn't be bothered when he/she saw a farang and doesn't understand English so just weighed it and sent it to save any hassle for them.

Not even close as deep down you well know. Think TM30 and Personal Info Form, and it'll get worse.

Do you really belive the banks are in bed with the immigration!!!!. Selling a house in UK now have to get a letter from a solicitor here before they will sell it due to the money laundering regulations. If I was in UK selling have to prove who I am still with ID/passport and a current working phone number land line or mobile so it's not only here regulations are getting g tighter and having to prove who you are by means of ID.
