I have a work permit but the thais bungled my documentation at Don Muang so I had to leave without a re-entry. I am in Bali returning on 20 October.

What do I have to do, apply for a tourist visa in Bali, or on arrival at Don Muang airport.

kind regards,

What exactly did you have before you left?

Did you have a non-b visa which is the only one that could be called a work visa?

Or did you have an extension of stay based upon working?

What was the problem with getting the re-entry permit? Those are normally easy to get for any permit to stay you might have.

If you you could get the required documents you could apply for a single entry non-b visa at the honorary Thai consulate in Bali.

Your nationality is unclear. My assumption, below, is that you had an extension of stay that is now canceled due to leaving without a reentry permit, and you do not have an unexpired visa for reentry into Thailand.

Getting a tourist visa in Bali is not straightforward. They have requirements dictated by the embassy in Jakarta that are not easy to satisfy unless prior preparation has been done.

As @ubonjoe pointed out, it would be much better, if possible, to get a single Non B instead. Since you already have a work permit, the consulate may not need much more documentation. It is worth clarifying with them early Monday.

You may end up (assuming you are eligible) getting a visa exempt entry on arrival in Bangkok, and then sorting out the mess subsequently. Note that your airline may want to see an onward ticket out of Thailand within 30 days if you are traveling back without a valid visa.

I have a non-b and have been on this for 7 years. From South Africa. It's usually an easy process but I ran out of time as my plane was about to depart so I had to leave without it. So I have my visa till next year, I just don't have a re-entry permit. So not sure if I can sort this out on arrival or if I have to get a tourist visa in Bali. Txs

look at your passport, is it an extension or a visa?

Suspect you have an extension of stay based on work not a visa.

You cannot sort this out and will have to return either with a tourist visa or visa exempt entry. You will then have to obtain a "B" visa with paperwork from your employer.

Strongly suspect that you have not had a "work visa" for 7 years but more ikely an annual extension obtained in Thailand on your (long since expired) non B visa.

So when you left Thailand on that annual extension your non B extension  was automatically canceled by your exit without a re-entry permit (which can only be obtained in Thailand, before departure).

You could have purchased the required re-entry permit at immigration BEFORE you left.

In fact, if you have  extended  (not renew) your Non B yearly by reason of employment, it is wise to purchase a multi entry re-entry permit for 3800 Bhat which is good for the year of that associated extension of the non B.

That way you have the re-entry permit in your passport, and in an emergency you can leave quickly and keep your extension alive.

Why wait ubtil you arrive at the airport to purchase one?

Question: have you been doing 90 day reporing?

if so that is a give-away that you actually  had an annual extension of your Non B visa which expired years ago, but was being kept alive yearly by an annual extension.

Either by you or perhaps your employer who had someonr do it for you, which is legal.

Did you get your non-B from south Africa, or did you get 1 year extension of stay based on employment from Immigration in Thailand?

Two different things.

If you are on extension based on working, try get a new non-B in Bali.

You can not work on a tourist visa.

No wonder people use incorrect terms, when long term posters do also. The visa is not extended, you obtain a new permission to stay based on (insert reason here).
