A father and son died at a stone quarry in Banteay Meanchey province about midday yesterday after being crushed by falling rocks in a landslide that also killed a colleague and which police blamed on the recent heavy rains. The three dead were explosive technicians Lim Lom, 52, his son Lim Kimlong, 26, and excavator driver Thom Sitha, who all lived in Monkgol Borey district’s Ou Prasat commune, said deputy district police chief Nhim Samorn.

“Before the accident, two workers were driving two excavators to dig and collect stone on the flank of the mountain, while a technical worker was standing nearby next to his own excavator. Once they reached the area they were due to work, and they had not yet started to collect the stones, suddenly a big rock above slid down and crushed the victims and the machines.” He said that heavy rainfall in the past two weeks had weakened the sides of the quarry and this is what caused the accident. He was unaware of any prior deadly accidents at the quarry.

Commune police chief Khem Mara said that before the accident, five staff had been working in the quarry, with the two survivors having been away from the landslide site. “One victim was removed immediately after the accident and taken to hospital but he could not be saved. The other two victims’ bodies were found three hours after the accident by police and quarry staff, who used four excavators to remove the stones to find the bodies,” he said.
