Cabinet nod for ADB loan for Highway 22 project

BANGKOK: -- The Cabinet Tuesday gave a green light to borrowings worth Bt6.808 billion from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the second phase of the Highways Department’s four-lane main-road construction project on Highway 22.

Nattaporn Jatusripitak, an adviser to Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn, said the planned routes extended the project from Udon Thani-Sakon Nakhon, and Sakon Nakhon-Nakhon Phanom to Roi Et-Yasothon at a construction cost of Bt6.808 billion.

Isn't there a more deserving project for that kind of investment? The much talked about Phuket tunnel springs to mind. Considering the number of accidents that take place on Patong Hill with bus brake failures happening all too frequently resulting in passenger deaths I would have thought the tunnel would take precedence over a road in the uppermost northeast region of the country.

If you really believe the tunnel will ever be built I have some interesting Nigerian investment schemes for you. The money was in the B40 million 'feasibility study'- its all gone quiet since then.

There is no such thing as 'brake failure'- its driver error.  A better option to relieve traffic and make the road potentially safer is a route from Kathu to Kamala and Chalong to Patong- both routes exist already in rough 4wd form.
