YALA: -- An army officer accused of ordering the brutal beating to death of a conscript at an army camp in Yala’s Bannang Sata district was stripped of his officer’s rank retroactively on September 5, according to an announcement in the Royal Gazette.

The incident took place at Payak camp in Bannang Sata district on April 1 when Sub-Lt Patnat Lertchaikul ordered his five subordinates who were on duty to beat up a conscript, 23-year old Pvt Songtham Modmud, for allegedly defying discipline.

It was alleged that the beating lasted about seven hours during which the victim was brutally beaten up with bare hands and wooden club. The victim was unconscious when he was rushed to the district hospital. He was later transferred to Yala provincial hospital where he was eventually declared dead from the injuries.

Yes a sign, that everything is going to stay the same.

The same would be no punishment at all.. this is something.. (not harsh enough) but still its something though like someone else said I wonder how long before he is back at his normal rank.

If he really will stay a long time at this lower rank its a big blow for him money wise and influence and serious.. just like how they send the police to inactive positions.

he tortured them and killed one of them while the other went to ICU. they found his genitals were burned with candles and his head was so badly beaten his eyes could open and brain was hemorrhaging.

Stripped of rank. Not even court-martialed.

According to a Human Rights Watch article from July 27, in its second last paragraph it notes that in May Prayut "...promised to make torture a criminal offense under Thai law and to fulfill Thailand’s obligations under the United Nations Convention against Torture. Under the convention, the Thai government is obligated to investigate and prosecute acts of torture and other ill-treatment committed by government officials...", https://www.hrw.org/news/2016/07/27/thailand-torture-victims-outspoken-niece-arrested.

This same article also reports on the case of Naritsarawan Kaewnopparat and the problems she has faced in her quest for justice on behalf of her uncle Pvt. Wichian Puaksorn.

As noted in KhaosodEnglish on September 23, Wichian , "...was tortured and beaten to death by a group of soldiers in June 2011 at an army base in Narathiwat...", http://news.thaivisa.com/thailand/niece-of-army-torture-victim-indicted-for-defaming-officer/154745/.

While Wichian died under similar circumstances to Songtham, in his case no one has been charged with any wrongdoing, and in a cynical twist Naritsarawan is currently facing defamation charges "... filed against her by the army officer who reportedly oversaw the deadly abuse of her uncle...".

Apparently, "... He (Maj. Phuri Perksophon) took offense to Naritsarawan’s messages and filed the defamation charges...". Also, it seems that Perksophon is the son of General Choke Perksophon, a senior member of Internal Security Operations Command (https://www.facebook.com/zenjournalist/posts/10154333444886154).

What an OT reaction from the army. The best trainers know you have to blood greyhounds if you want them to win races. You need to be confident the troops will do their best when the necessity arises.

What a load of drivel

So how many "greyhounds" do you think should be beaten to death before they win a race?

Getting the best out of the troops does not mean beatings.....speaking as an ex trainer

Its a start.. better than nothing.. but not harsh enough.. but at least a sign.

It is not a start, it is not better than nothing it is actually a complete insult to the family of the dead and a glowing indictment of all that is wrong here....

tbh some of you apologists make me despair wonder what you would think if it was a member of your family that was beaten to death.....

This is so wrong on so many levels, I have been around Asia and Thailand for a few years yet still shocked by this.

Disgusting episode, can the media ask the PM for his opinion on this?

Appalling,  let the human rights watchdogs tear apart the Thai Military injustice system on this one, terrible.

I presume you are taking the mickey?

If not - well, do you even have the beginnings of a clue about training soldiers?

Utter cowardice and complete lack of humanity;  five on one and the use of weapons.  It is completely shameful.

Just a normal practice, do you really expect someone to go one to one with the chance of losing - nope , just remember what country you are in.

Intentionally ? (but I agree punishment is too light but i do see it as improvement on no punishment at all)

You kidding? Again??

7 hrs beatings + wooden club = intent - period.

Strip of rank as sole 'punishment' = what a funkin' farce = TIT

As long as citizens go along with it there's not much to be done & they have it coming every old day and way ...
