Ko Samet/Rayong/Ban Phe hotel or tourist advice

I've never been to Ko Samet and want to check it out.  We'll just take one or two day trips to the island, but we are looking for a hotel on the mainland.  Any suggestions.  Near good Thai places to eat for my wife and her mom would be nice.  Near beer bars for me.  Near the beach for the 2 kids.

Thanks

Can you recommend a hotel for under $75 / night near the beach?

Suggest you Google "Hotels Laem Mae Phim". This should produce a few hotels which appear to fall within your price limit plus reviews. Can't vouch for any based on personal experience, though, since I've never stayed at any of them.

Upon further reflection, one place which I can recommend is the Palmeraie. My sister stayed there a few years ago while visiting us and quite liked it, as did a friend of mine from the UK subsequently. It is located 2km to the west of Laem Mae Phim and correspondingly nearer to Ban Phe and the Koh Samed ferries. But you do need your own transport to get out and about since there is really nothing else in the immediate vicinity. Their website is at http://www.palmeraiebeachrayong.com/en/homepage/

There is great 12 room small hotel in the back of Ban Phe - adjacent to the market - a bit hidden away - very well appointed  Thai family run.  Being in heart of Ban Phe its 300m walk to ferry pier  - oodles of choice of thai food to eat - wide choice - and a few beer bars in there too.    It quite a smart choice to day boat to Koh Samet and come back to Ban Phe for evening.

Check here - Photos on web site a bit old garden is very nicely developed now.  Well under your budget.

Funny guy, it's so ridiculous to compare staying on a beach overnight at Samet and going back to ugly Banphe, even many places to stay for cheap there.

This will strange to you as you obviously have only one solution to enjoying Koh Samet that you think is acceptable and that everyone must follow that view.  Yes Koh Samet can be a wonderful experience for some to stay overnight but it is not the only solution.   When the Island is busy the popular beaches are heaving with bodies - particularly when the tide is high  with little beach space.   The food  on general sale formulaic - one beach bar offering much the same as the next - and expensive - it should be retail space and raw food supply at a extra cost & premium.  For some, unlimited daily beach time is the dream and one never  tires - for others day after day  it quickly become tedious

You will be both amused and informed to know a great many people & families who have consistently visited the Island over many many years - and have spent time 'staying on the island' now will elect to stay in  mainland accommodation - choosing to only travel over for the odd days.

There are some stunning beaches on the mainland  and some hidden gems (don't ask, you don't need to know)   that compare well to Koh Samet's finest, a great many of these nearly empty certainly midweek and some even at weekends - giving some serenity and peace, 90% of then have spectacular sunsets to enjoy compared to Koh Samet's 10%.    For a Thai visitor - the shear variety, quality and cost to eat specialist street food on the mainland is infinitely better than 'resort food'  that is available on Koh Samet -  Ban Phe is a proper working Thai community - it is not a pure resort destination for a great many, sure not all,  visitors it is 'normal' and very welcoming.

I've always gotten in for B20 with my Thai DL. May have changed.

I think it has. We went there a few years ago, and I paid 20Baht. Last April we went with friends and this time I was asked for 200Baht. I can't remember what the guy said when I objected, but he then asked for 100Baht!

In July we were in Nakhon Nayok for a few days and was met with a blank refusal of any concession to get into one of the national parks there.

I sense that paying the Thai price with a Thai Driving Licence was always an unofficial concession which is now being withdrawn.
