Consumer board assures farmers can sell rice directly to consumers online

BANGKOK: -- The Office of the Consumer Protection Board assures farmers that they can sell rice directly to consumers using the online channel.

Assurance by the state agency in charge of protecting consumers came after farmers have planned to group together to sell their rice directly to consumers after rice millers offered very low prices for their paddy claiming various reasons to suppress the paddy prices.

The office said on its Facebook page that direct selling of rice by farmers via the social media networks does not breach the Direct Selling and Direct Marketing Act.

It said the intent of the law is aimed at supervising e-commerce operators doing business professionally and not at farmers using  e-commerce channel to sell rice occasionally, not professionally.

It said although farmers will post their products on the webpage, but the deal and details have yet to be negotiated between the seller and the buyer.

Therefore actual rice deal has not yet happened instantly on the webpage, meaning what they offer to sell does not violate the law.

"...Consumer board assures farmers can sell rice directly to consumers online..."

It would appear that the Office of the Consumer Protection Board displays an understanding, of how most people live in rural Thailand, that is on a par with "Let them eat cake" !!!

The Act:

Compliance with this Act may present some interesting conditions:

  •  it provides a seven-day period from which a consumer may return the thing purchased from the seller in cases he changes his mind.
  • if returned the seller is obliged to refund the buyer with the full amount of money paid to him

In any case the OCPB should put its assurances to farmers in writing, preferrably endorsed by the Office of the Attorney General.

They should be able to sell their product as they see fit.  Sounds like a wonderful opportunity for a phone based rice trading website that is easy to use.  Wonder how shipping is handled.

Yes, sell a common commodity in over supply by ten thousands of sellers. That will definitely keep prices high for all sellers...NOT.

Sorry but i only buy what i can see (from a Thai). Every time i order something the order goes wrong.

Last week i ordered a big piece of skai-leather, the vendor didn't bring it a few times so i came for nothing to his shop but after he had it it was a totally different color than i ordered.

This has happened so many times now that i only buy what i can see....too many things can go wrong. I also can't use paypal in Thailand (only on ebay) and just got 3 parcels from China refunded which got lost in Thailand. So nope i won't buy online from them....If they go sit on the parkinglot from the Makro i might buy it but first have to see how clean the rice is.

FOB and there goes your profit up in smoke. Also the government should issue free laptops to the farmers to get them started. How many farmers have computers hold up your hands!!

I see.... but you can't sell any food or drink on the Thai market without FDA approval number on your packaging .....

How they gonna tackle this issue ?

They might have boardcomputers in their big new pickuptrucks or the smartphones will do the job.

Can they not organise one guy in the village with a big truck who collects the rice and drives to BKK to sell it somewhere? Sell it to the Royal Project they have loads of shops spread over the country.

They sound like a bunch of helpless babies if they don't know how to sell rice to BKK. Loads and loads of pickups drive down here every day and on holidays there's huge trafficjam to upcountry in all directions.

I just hope they have good scales which can measure kilo's exactly instead of 900 gram.....:whistling:

Talking of scales where are the scales of justice in all of this hullabaloo. Did Comey act within the law is Harry Reid right? does Hillary due to circumstances deserve a swift answer? Should Trump be allowed to run off at the mouth yelling "Watergate all over again" without proof. This whole fiasco almost renders some moves by the junta as being legal.

And how many can even read?

They don't know how to sell rice to Thai people?? :passifier::passifier:

I see fruitvendors selling out of pickuptrucks every day here in BKK, they cause very dangerous situations though and better go stand on a parkinglot or market.

Also lobste and crabvendors park along the main roads to sell their fresh seafood. Or Somchais with inflatable stuff.

My wife comes from a ricegrowing family but when she goes upcountry she also doesn't know where to buy rice so we buy it from the Makro and that's fine with her. Her brother also has a brand new pickuptruck (a big one of course) because once a year he has to transport some rice but they rented out all their land to farmers.

Once i tried to buy rice on a market in BKK but the vendor was so busy playing candycrush she even didn't hear or see me, even after some loud HELLO's. Okay no problem, at the Makro we can grab it ourself and don't have to wait for them to weigh it. Is also cheaper by the way and comes in a good quality plastic bag, not one of those thin ones.
