Man didn't die from police beating, says Bangkok police chief

BANGKOK: -- The chief of Bangkok's police has said that injuries sustained by a man in a gambling raid on Wednesday were not enough to kill him.

 

But doctors have said that Don Daengjantip, 34, was covered in bruises caused by a blunt object.

 

Now the family want justice - the deceased's father who picked up his son's corpse yesterday said they would take action against the force, reports Daily News.

 

Chief Sanit Mahathavorn was speaking at metropolitan HQ yesterday following Don's death in front of a house in Soi Rung Reuang, Huay Kwang around ten pm on Wednesday evening. 

 

He had been playing Hi-Lo and drinking with friends when a patrol arrived.

 

Sanit said that he had set up a committee to get to the truth of the matter but it was his opinion that the injuries of the dead man were superficial and did not result in his death. If it can be shown that he died from heart failure then police would be in the clear, he said.

 

If he died from other injuries there could indeed be a prosecution, he conceded.

 

Dr Pornchai Suthirakhun said that bruises were found all over the dead man's body and were caused by trauma from a blunt object though he could not say what exactly. The dead man had no medical records that were available.

 

Met spokesman Kritsana Patanacharoen also commented that in his opinion there was no excessive force used in the arrest though he couldn't say how the bruising had occurred either.

 

The dead man's father Khamna Daengjantip and relatives are more sure of how Don met his death, however. As Khamna arrived at the hospital to take his son's corpse for a funeral in Mae Sot in the north west, he vowed that the family intend to take action against the police.

 

"All they were doing was having a drink and playing some Hi-Lo," he lamented.

 

When the story broke yesterday Suthisarn police who handled the matter were initially unprepared to admit that their force had even been on the scene.

 

At least now the force have accepted that their own patrol was there.

Deny deny deny till truth comes to light. Yes he had multiple bruises but then the room was full of spirits the liquid kind. Did his friends beat him up? RIP young fellow. Bridge would have been a safer path for you.

Wow!!! The chief of Bangkok's police has received such extensive training in medical diagnoses that he can observe external bruises and determine or rule out if they were lethal enough to cause fatal internal or cerebral injuries.

Very sad. Man dies for playing high-lo in a house. I mean really? Sort your house out, Thailand.

 

Got people stealing billions of Baht from their own people walking free, and you've got people dying from playing <deleted> high-lo. Ridiculous, backwards mentalities, laws and punishments.

And, of course, Mahathavorn would presumably know how much injury needs to be inflicted to kill someone !!!

 

To further highlight his disgusting lack of dignity, he went on to say, "If it can be shown that he died from heart failure then police would be in the clear...". This will most probably be the outcome, as Mahathavorn has set up a committee to get to the "truth" of the matter, rather than request an independent investigation.

Everyone dies of heart-failure.

One lie at the start will roll on to coverup.Who does the autopsy?

It's disgusting the way they behave so little wonder the public have no faith in them unless of course they're conducting the opinion poll.

Trying not to be too picky, but wouldn't it be good to see why the heart failure occurred before clearing anyone?

 

If of course, this was the cause of death.

A Severe beating is trauma to the body no doubt about that one.

This will be a shock to the body no doubt about that one.

This can lead to the possibility of a heart attack. No doubt about that.

 

If the man had carried on playing Hi Lo would he have died from any causes or injuries..... we very much doubt that.

After a car crash you can die from your injuries and those injuries will be deemed to be the cause of your death.

But Hey the car crash was the cause of those injuries.

Was it really necessary to bludgeon this man?
