Thais warned of Libya

BANGKOK:-- THE Employment Department has warned people to beware of false promises of jobs in Libya, where civil unrest still rages.

 

“Because of safety concerns, the Labour Ministry has barred Thais from working there,” the department’s director-general Singhadet Chu-umnart said yesterday.

He issued the warning after receiving a report that six Thais were lured into paying Bt80,000 each to an illicit agent, arriving in Libya on a tourist visa, and not getting a job.

A very necessary warning but how many will simply ignore it as when it comes to the lure of making big money commonsense and caution goes out the window ?

If something sounds too good to be true it usually is doesn't seem to be  much of a consideration here far too often.

Too many never get beyond what the supposed salary will be and nothing else matters.

A couple of years back had to arm SIL with a good explanation for one of her bosses (medium size construction company) as to why getting into business in Libya is probably not the best idea. SIL, while not that versed in global affairs (but far from being daft), thought perhaps a more stable surroundings would do for a company's first venture abroad. The whole thing didn't go through, of course, mainly because the supposed contact man couldn't actually deliver.

A Scam is a Scam and you will find that anywhere.

 

But what surprises me the most here was how were they ever able to get a Visa to go there in the first place. Which they would need to even board the plane from Bangkok. Hum???

 

All I can say is that the food there was amazing.

It isn't just workers from such as Thailand going there. Europeans also  go for work; many Italian companies have business there as do other countries. Recently there were kidnappings of Italians and a Canadian; so perhaps Europeans (and Canadians) don't read maps or international news?

Guess it's the lure of the salaries and the "won't happen to me" attitude that persuades them to risk it.
