That's great news!   Did they pay the extra money to have the anti derail wheels fitted?

Sounds like it's a Choo Choo train.

Enjoy the nostalgia of the old Thai Railway soon because modernization is here.

Report fails to mention departure and arrivals times and fares and where can book.

Oh Oooohhh, made in China .......:whistling::whistling:

Made in China, remember Hong Kong And Singapore sent heirs back  for r epairs

This is a much needed improvement.  I travelled extensively by train here 40  and 30 years ago...and it was a great way to travel.  Comfortable seats and bunk.  Good friends...take your own food or  buy it.  Only difference is now no alcohol.  No new rolling stock had been added since then and it is good to see things back to the new again.  Much better than Air Asia and you see things and meet people too.

You could try any train station...

or the Thai railways website online.  http://www.thairailways.com/booking-ticket.html

Yes no news of which services they will on so we expect the heritage DMUs also to struggle on until they get to Chiang Rai!

It was reported in previous articles.

My only suggestion is check with  the station.

THe fare was about 1200 baht second class sleeper.

From the look of the carriages I am guessing they will be used as sleepers, they really ought to promote daylight travel so people can enjoy the scenery.

Would love to travel more by train but when the loos dont work and the seats are uncomfortable it is hardly encouraging me is it.

This news today is good but this should be only the start, along with th doubling of tracks lets hope someone continues to smile on SRT and they drag them into the future.

At the moment the route miles from Bangkok to Chiangmai is much further than the road.  There will be daylight travel and if if it is through the mountains in daylight (or especially with the sun coming up) in the mountains  you are in for a treat.

(It is worth a special train trip from chiangmai to Lampung to see this. Only a few baht to..

And New Zealand got Chinese trains with asbestos in them even when they specifically requested "no asbestos".

Just how important are the rails? Or do you mean "imported" rails?

Here they are, still made in China, though

And I guess New Zealand charges a fare as low as $3 between Auckland and Wellington which is way less distance.

All of the Bkk to Chiang Mai rails from about half way up the journey were totally reconstructed with new materials about 2 to 3 years ago.

A few weeks back there were many photos, including very modern toilets, like an aircraft set up, and the new restaurant cars, look quite good.

Other posters earlier mentioned that the new cars have very modern suspension and therefore much smoother ride.

My further question is whether the carriages are locked when travelling to prevent thieves jumping on the train.

Has anyone taken the new train yet?  Are they playing music/movies/videos in the 2nd class sleeper cars?

I guess it would be the mourning music or special videos now if they are playing something.

It is a sad fact for the railway industry in other countries, the Chinese railway industry copies and sells cheaper.

And nowadays reasonable quality.

I'm afraid what we see on the ceiling are TV screens??

So any passenger will have to endure the soundtrack of imposed horror movies during the ride?

That was at no extra cost   :cheesy:

What a bargain

Do they run sideways.

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect

Looks good.

Well lets hope all the trains to Chiang Mai are the new models.

I enjoyed the old trains but it was 15 hours so anything to upgrade the experience.

I hope they get this fired up from BKK to Hua Hin. Not that it is that bad now.
