Merkel backs Foreign Minister Steinmeier for German presidency

BERLIN: -- Germany’s Frank-Walter Steinmeier is hotly tipped to become the country’s next president after Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats agreed to back his candidacy.

Currently foreign minister, if approved, the Social Democrat would take up the largely ceremonial post from incumbent, Joachim Gauck, in February next year, when the president steps down.

Merkel’s CDU party is said to have reluctantly thrown its weight behind Steinmeier after failing to find a suitable candidate of its own.

That's the kiss of death for poor Mr. Steinmeier, then...

merkel will be a hard act to follow. his best hope is that trump orders a stop to the bombing of syria and the tide of refugees reduces.

Hopefully a shift to the right in Germany. Wouldn't be hard when that's he only way to go.

Er, did you read the article then? Clue - President / Chancellor could be two very different offices. And one is largely ceremonial. Guess which they're shoving this senile old socialist clown towards?

He is not taking over from Merkel!  You did read the OP?

He's lost the plot for sometime. Remember when talking about the EU before Brexit he said that "elections shouldn't be allowed to change things"? He's almost as embarrassing as balmy Boris at times.

Shoved upwards to a nice ceremonial (and no doubt lucrative) role. Another put out to pasture in the rich pasture land of politicians.

Yes Angela your obviously physic you can read the handwriting on the wall. You will obviously join Cameron, Blair and Harper and many other leaders who have royally screwed things up and moved onto to bigger (money wise) and better things. I just hope your future employer does not check your resume you could be in trouble but then they only want your name and not your mind. Its just amazing how politicians can totally (would like to use another word) screw things up and then wave goodbye leaving their citizens holding the bag. Ironic is it not??

yes but i was confused by it. i actually though chancellor and president were the same thing.

Surely after next year's elections, Merkel will not even have a ceremonial role to play?
