Direct rice sales continue across the nation

BANGKOK, 17 November 2016 (NNT) – Agencies across the country have contributed to the government’s effort to aid rice farmers by providing them spaces to directly sell their grains to the public.

Students of Kasetsart University have helped farmers bring 2.5 tons of rice to the institution’s central cafeteria for sale to the public. Much of the stock being up is from farmers in Buriram province and Surin province with prices set at 35 baht per kilogram. An initial sale saw over 2 tons of rice sold in less than one hour.

In Petchabun province, the governor opened a special flea market set up for rice growers in response to the dwindling price of the crop. It is intended that by allowing direct sale of rice by farmers, they will be able to compete with other market members and improve their income.

Local cooperatives have used the flea market as an opportunity to also teach farmers about marketing and selling their rice, equipping them with skills for future use.

They are selling jasmine rice for 35 Baht/kg at Kasetsart?! Yesterday I was in Phichit and I bought 20kg jasmine rice for only 480Baht (24Baht/kg), the difference is that I know that the rice I bought is 100% organic and NON-GMO (I know where it's grown, milled and tested) while I'm 99.9% sure that the rice for sale at Kasetsart was grown using chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
