webfact
THAI gives rice farmers new direct-sale mechanism By Petchanet Pratruangkrai The Nation BANGKOK: -- Thai Airways international Plc (THAI) has joined forces with the Commerce Ministry to help farmers struggling from low rice prices by introducing a range of initiative such as farmers selling directly to the carrier’s cooperatives, retail shops and markets. The national carrier will also create a new menu to introduce specialty rice grains to increase consumption of Thai rice, while providing free areas for farmers at its cooperatives to sell their products as well as allowing the sale of packed rice at its shops at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports. 55Jay
We buy sacks of rice each year, direct from farmers in our area. Never seen the wife buy rice at Tesco/Makro, etc., although infrequently, she gets small quantities that's purple or red in color.

You can also buy the purple rice; directly from the farmers to save money.

Dumbastheycome
Just today harvested an as yet unknown tonna ge of Hom Mali. Will not be selling but using most of what has been a bumper crop. Local buyer/agents offer between 6 > 7 bht/kilo despite "official" price double that. A direct sale mechanism may help but of course it is a buyers market depite "mechanisms. Our mechanism is to use the bulk in our restaurant. Sticky sod to the middle men ! :) Sad that so many are/have already accepted bogus prices because of the urgency of debt. Perhaps a mechanism the government could consider is an agency that audits/ checks the buyer strangehold on growers who have little option. Brer Fox
This is getting more ridiculous by the day. The rice industry in Thailand is stuffed. When will someone admit it rather than play these silly political games. So thousands of tonnes of rice are going to be sold out of Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports and the problem will be solved and the rice farmers will be laughing all the way to the bank. Yo ho ho!.... and life goes on in Thailand
