Antibiotic For Infection In Dog's Foot

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend me an antibiotic for treating an infection in our dogs foot.  He got a cut, and now it has become infected, and has some yellow puss coming from where the cut was.  We have taken him to the vets over the last couple of weeks, spending 3000 baht, and the tablets they have given us have not managed to shift the infection.  We keep it clean, and treat it with Betadine cream and keep him locked up most the day so it doesnt get dirty, but we cant seem to shift it and he is limping badly now

previously the vets gave anti inflammatory, and an antibiotic that was blue / purple and quite large (about the size of a 5 baht coin)

I am NOT A Vet but when my bull terrier has a bacteria infection which he get often,  he is prescribed Cephalexin,  500mg due to weight of dog (25kg).

I can buy it from a chemist in phuket,  cheaper than vets and same active ingredient .  I would still see a vet rather than guess dose and self medicate ad wrong antibiotics will be counter productive

Your best bet as far as antibiotics is getting it from the vet, injections if possible.

The biggest problem is keeping the wound clean and dry and keeping the dog from licking it which is a big problem on the foot. A muzzle might help and a bandage as long as the wound is able to get some air.

Good luck!

Agree entirely with the vet giving an antibiotic injection, followed up with tablets.  I'm suprised your vet didn't give him an antibiotic injection whilst there.

As the problem isn't improving and it seems a straight forward wound, personally I'd find another vet.  Unless, of course, the vet has been good previously.  Either way, it sounds as if your dog needs further vet treatment.

I gather betadine needs 15 mins. to 'soak in' - and a 'lampshade' or muzzle will work for the 15 minutes required.
