Thailand’s Civil Servants Urged to Take a Break to Break a Sweat

By POYPITI AMATATHAM and MIKE IVESNOV

The New York Times

BANGKOK — He is already prime minister of Thailand and the chief of a military junta that seized power in a 2014 coup.

Now, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha can add another title: aerobics master in chief.

Thailand’s military junta has turned an eye toward its civil servants’ behavior — and heart rates — through a new policy that urges them to exercise once a week during working hours.

Officials said that the voluntary program, which began Wednesday, was part of a national campaign to model good behavior for children, and that General Prayuth had created it after learning of research that documented widespread physical idleness among Thailand’s youth and older citizens.

Now if only such effort went into tackling serious issues such as a certain monk running rings around the law and those supposedly ' enforcing ' it.

That's a novel approach. Paying civil servants to exercise during normal working hours. You can bet if it was outside normal working hours no one would turn up.

Anyway I doubt the loss of productivity will be noticed. One and a half hours a week without being able to play with their phone is a bit cruel.

Do they have to exercise in their suits, and are their facilities for showering after they have worked up a sweat? If not, I will not be visiting any government office after 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays!

“PM leads physical exercise for the second week

Now, all that fearless leader needs is some followers. Do I hear any volunteers? Didn't think so. "Pass the sugar. My Phad Thai isn't sweet enough."

How about making them ride a bicycle to work ?   Oh yeah, Thailand has some of the most dangerous roads in the world.  Wonder if after jazzercise class they might look at that.

A new variation on an old theme,

The boss" coming look busy,

The boss' coming start exercising.

Exercise once a week? He'd be better off feeding them Baked Beans as they would lose more calories when they fart than they do during this charade.

Has a link to this praise been uncovered yet?

“I’ll do a warm-up with you for 10, 15 minutes, and then we’ll take a rest,” he said. “Last time we didn’t rest, so it was quite exhausting.”

Says it all really...

"...international role model..." ???

Looks more like he's just found a discarded banana skin !!!

Just viewed a program on Channel News Asia on the Chinese Silk Road. When they "move" into a country and build factories they have a Chinese co-ordinator that does calisthentics before work starts. They claim it improves productivity by 30%. The PM could be onto something here

Good on him. He's on the right page, now tax the arse out of cigarettes.

Apparently you dont buy cigarettes,  they are, and recently have, increasing in price significantly.

Just wait... it will all be forgotten when the PM realises they will have to find more money for pensions in years to come.

One poster's suggestion that they should be encouraged to cycle to work instead was a good one.  Two advantages........healthy excercise in THEIR OWN TIME and cycling on the roads would reduce their numbers significantly within a week and save the Government part of the wage bill.  :whistling:

I hope those public servants are doing their exercises when their off the clock.  I don't see why the taxpayers should be footing the bill.....no pun intended!
