Ideal places in Thailand for a working holiday

Hi,

I'm going to Thailand for a couple weeks over the New Year. This will be my third trip to Thailand, but my first where getting work done will be that primary goal (I do freelance translation). So I have an "ideal situation" in mind... I guess it must exist somewhere!  Basically, I'm thinking something quiet-ish on the beach where I can actually sit at a table / desk outside and work. A bit of a town not far away would be nice, especially if there are wats / other places to explore. Wherever I stay, good WiFi will be a must. Also I don't want to spend sooo much time travelling, so closer to BKK is better (though not being mobbed takes priority to proximity).  The beaches in the Phetchaburi area look like a possibility, but I guess they must get pretty packed, no? Look forward to any thoughts from folks in the know...  Thanks!

Sounds great!  Whatever you figure out, good luck!

Yes, the beaches in Cha-Am and near Hua Hin get pretty crowded on weekends.  As do the ones in Chonburi (including Pattaya and surrounds).  WiFi could be an issue.  But might get around that by getting a good wireless package from DTAC or True.  Then you can hotspot from your phone pretty much anywhere.  Speeds are getting pretty good here now.

What's your price range for a hotel?

Im fairly biased and consistent with my answers to such questions.....

...... in my opinion one of the last unspoiled paradises in Thailand is Koh Mak, Trat.

Beaches are lovely, water is perfect, and island is never crowded even on the highest of holidays.

Thanks a lot! And thank you for the good info.

Up to 1500 will be doable, but under 1300 would be ideal.

Hi, Thanks for that!  I read about Koh Mak. It does sound pretty amazing. I'll have to re-visit that as an option. Cheers!

What you are looking for might depend as much upon the hotel as the area. I would look south of Hua hin. Maybe Prachuap area. Good luck.

That sounds like sound advice... I'll keep it in mind!

Regarding wifi, I've been very happy with AIS Super Wifi.  I have AIS mobile service and bought a month-long mobile phone unlimited data promotion that includes free access to their wifi, which I seem to find all over (but haven't been to beach areas, so maybe not there, I don't know). Even if you're staying for less than a month, it was quite inexpensive (399 baht, I think) and may be worth it for you. If you do this, I recommend going to an AIS office to activate the plan -- there seem to be a myriad of plans and it would be easy to get the wrong one.

koh larn is great and very convenient. sure there as some quiet spots on the island. pretty sure you will get good 3 and 4G coverage there. just keep it to yourself you are working. thais make money of reporting you are working and some westerners get jealous.  better not to risk it. you may think i am paranoid but i have had work permit problems before and lost my passport for 2 years. not an experience i ever intend to repeat.

With respect, I think Koh Larn would be boring after one night.  Way too many day trippers.  Koh Mak is also a very small island.  I'd try something like Koh Chang.  Or Koh Lanta.

Your budget is OK.  South of Hua Hin, things start to get interesting.  Kui Buri down to Prachuap Khiri Khan and even all the way down to Chumphon has some great beaches and many sea side resorts.  We like Ban Krut a lot.  Several options there and relatively easy to get to via the train.  Bang Saphan is also great.

Down the other coast, many options from Bang Saray south!

Thanks for your ideas...  I'll be doing work, but I'm not "working in Thailand." I live in Japan and it's for my Japan based translation business. Still, less said about it the better I guess!

I'll check out those options too... thanks for your time!

you of course have the correct work permit in place ???

I guess I should have worded the title differently... I'll be working while on vacation in Thailand, not "working in Thailand." I live in Japan and it's freelance work for my Japan based business.

Thanks though

Don’t know if this is your thing or not. Not next to Bangkok, but there are several “working” options on the island of Koh Phangan:

Koh Phangan is known for it’s full moon parties, but you can avoid all that if you want a laid back and peaceful place to stay.

This would take care of  the “working” part of your holiday. Just search out accommodations nearby.

Ko Mak is very nice but not much to do and very isolated.

Not sure about internet quality.

Maybe Ko Samet or Ko Chang. Both have reliable internet and close to the mainland incase you get bored and want to head to the mainland.
