My marriage visa runs out in March (non O multiple entry). I have never had an extension.

In the past I have got a new visa at the Consulate in the UK.

Could I change this to a retirement visa before it runs out? I believe this involves less paperwork than a marriage visa. I have the necessary funds etc. If I can do this what is the process, costs etc? I work away and will only be in Thailand 6 weeks at a time. Do I need permission to leave from immigration? How does it work once I have the visa? Many thanks in advance.

You could apply for an extension of stay based upon retirement during the last 30 days of any of the 90 day entries you get from your non-o visa.

You need 800k baht in a Thai bank for 60 days on the date you apply or proof of 65k bath income or a combination of the two totaling 800k baht.

Is an "extension of stay" another year with the usual 90 day reporting?

What I was hoping to get was another 1 year visa.

I will be leaving the country within 90 days throughout the year.

Is there a requirement to inform immigration when leaving?

Many thanks.

You will get a one year extension. You would need to do 90 day reports if you stayed longer than 90  consecutive days.

You need a re-entry permit to keep your extension valid if you travel. A single re-entry permit costs 1000 baht and a multiple 3800 baht. A re-entry permit is valid until your extension ends and gives the same permit to stay as your extension when you enter the country.

No check in with immigration before you leave.

If you want a 1 year multiple entry visa rather than a 1 year extension of stay/re-entry permit, you could easily get it a the Thai consulate in Savannakhet, Laos. They only require your marriage certificate and copies of your wifes ID/house book. It's also available from Penang, Maylasia, but you'd need to show 400K baht in the bank at that consulate.

Thanks Joe,

Can I get the re-entry permit (multi entry) the same time as I get the retirement visa?

How long does it normally take to get a retirement visa?

Apart from the proof of funds what else will I need to take with me?

Is it best to go directly to immigration or a visa agent?

Many thanks in advance.

You can apply for a re-entry permit as soon as the extension of stay (not a visa) stamp is done in your passport. The extension stamp will be done on the same day you apply for it.

For proof of the 800k in the bank you will need a letter from the bank confirming your account and the balance in it and copies of your up to date bank book to prove the it has been there 60 days.

Copies of your passport pages and TM6 departure cared. Proof of residence will be needed.

Easy done not need for an agent.
