Udon Thani to curb road accidents in 2017

UDON THANI, 14 December 2016 (NNT) - Udon Thani has kicked off a campaign to reduce road accidents for the entire year of 2017.

Udon Thani Governor Chayawut Chantorn presided over the opening of the campaign putting together efforts from government agencies and educational institutions to reduce road fatalities. A memorandum of understanding has also been signed with an aim to keep road fatalities below 19 for every 100,000 people and to lower the risk of road accidents caused by human activities, vehicles, road and environment conditions.

According to the Office of Udon Thani Public Health, nearly 400 people were killed on the road from October last year to September this year or a monthly average of 33 deaths. More than 16,000 people were injured during the period, representing 3.2 million baht worth of damage to the Thai economy.

From October to November this year, 76 people, most of whom were 20-29 years old, died in road accidents. Common causes included drunk driving, speeding and driving in the wrong lane. Many of them were also not wearing a helmet or a seat belt. Most of the accidents occurred in populated areas and usually happened between 4 pm and 8 pm.

Do they mean that cost for the Thai economy is 200 THB per head for the 16.000 injured or 8000 THB each for the 400 Dead :shock1:

I suspect the major cause of accidents is driving without a valid driving license,  and not drunk driving, though that could be the 2nd cause...

A well intentioned campaign but those running it will have the job in front of them.

Just completed a car journey Udon Thani - Phon Phisai - Nong Khai and estimate only 15% of motor cyclists wearing helmets and that is not including schoolchildren.

The same type of journey in country Vietnam would see 85% wearing helmets simply because of the heavy fines and strict policing.

In Thailand the police are not interested in the minnows. Bigger fish to catch fry and more take-home pay to be made elsewhere.
