PHUKET: -- More than 100 metered taxi drivers operating out of Phuket International Airport massed at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday (Dec 14) to file a formal complaint over being charged what they called “exorbitant” fees for parking at the airport, among a slew of other grievances.

The complaint was received by Apiwat Yodwan, Chief of the Phuket Damrongdhama Centre (Ombudsman’s Office).

Manop Pacha, who heads the metered taxi drivers at the airport, explained that after Phuket Taxi Metre Co Ltd won the government contract from Airports of Thailand* (AoT) to manage all metered taxis at the airport, the company hiked fees for parking at the airport from B200 to B500 per month per taxi.

There are more than 300 metered taxi drivers operating out of the airport, Mr Manop noted, meaning a hike from B60,000 to B150,000 in parking fees collected from metered taxi drivers each month.

“We want provincial officers to talk to with airport officials and Phuket Taxi Metre Co Ltd management to consider changing the car park location and reducing the fee back to B200 per vehicle,” Mr Manop said.

The taxi drivers are complaining about exorbitant fees!!

Karma !!!:partytime2:

Nice to see these thieves get a taste of their own medicine.. scum

As soon a TAT organised a visa discount for tourists the sharks quickly found ways to take the money back out of the tourists pockets. Hotels were first with an announced 10% increase in accommodation fees. Now we have the Phuket Taxi Metre Co Ltd taking the money from the taxis who will in turn take it from the tourists. There are surely other examples which are hidden.

This country is crippled with greed, graft and corruption and tourists are suckered at every turn.

An ultimate irony!

More than 100 passengers at Phuket International Airport massed at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday (Dec 14) to file a formal complaint over being charged what they called “exorbitant” fees for taxis at the airport, among a slew of other grievances.

That's better!!

No doubt the taxi drivers will pass on the increase in their costs to the consumers. Probably about tenfold.

300 baht extra a month is the price of 1/3 of one trip they charge.  Let's not forget the 50 baht airport surcharge goes directly to the driver to offset their costs.  Nothing but greedy POS's.

Surely Phuket airport was built in an area in the north, where it could make the most money in transport fees

Is it? They will just pass it onto tourists who have no idea of prices

Every now and then you get an absolute turkey as a driver, rude, takes you the long way and is anything but helpful... yes. Karma..

Wow! They pay less than 20 baht per day for parking and charge 1,000 baht for a trip to Patong. Life is so tough for them.
