Hey all,

I'm teaching a course in radio and TV this summer in Bangkok. Can anyone tell me if any U.S. comedies or dramas are popular in Thailand?

They could either be current shows or old shows in syndication.

They are not on network TV, they are on UBC cable and satelite TV, but they are Thai TV stations.

The West Wing, Will & Grace, Friends, CSI, Mad About You, The Office, ... oh, sorry, the last one is poms

Well not on regular terrestial TV.

They can be found on UBCTV and other smaller cable companies.

Most US comedies and dramas are on UBC Series which is basically all in english with the possibility of Thai soundtrack and of course subtitles.

Survivor did make it to regular TV and so have Thai versions of a couple of the recent quiz shows such as "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" and "The Weakest Link", which created quite an impact with letters to the editor etc

The most popular programmes on Thai TV imo are game shows and soaps

I came to this post by mistake, as I saw Tv I just assumed it was about transvestites.

Still if you want to see them Thai Tv's are much better looking than the ones in the UK, hobbling around on size 12 high heels and 5 Oclock shadow but there again some of the real women look like that there.

My brother/sister inlaw is one and he's better looking than my better half.

As to American comedies,seems an oxymoron to me, bit like military intelligence

and fighting for peace.

The Beverly Hill Billies are the Bomb! Anything pre 1975 is good stuff. Friends makes me want to puke. Seinfeld is the worst; always had a headache after watching that idiotic sh*t.

I must admit, I do like US TV , but the best comedies are usually British!

I see there is a new program in the USA, where 5 couples play a game to win a baby - now thats funny!

I agree English shows are much funnier than American, maybe because I am a colonist and share a similair sense of humour. I mean how many fart jokes do u see on American tv ??

I saw Friends on Thai terrestrial TV a few months ago. but I think it was around season 6 or 7, not particularly recent. I know my wife likes it, but she first saw it in the UK.

I also saw references to Alias on Channel 7s website

Thailand has 6 terrestrial channels, (3,5,7,9,11 and ITV), the first 5 are run by assorted government departments. ITV is the newest terrestrial and isn't government run, but I "think" it belongs to one of the prime minister's companies. (I could definitely be wrong on that though).

Channels 9 and 11 seem to be less entertainment oriented than 3,5,7.

Most Thai TV is home-grown. Possibly as a result of having a different language, or because it's government run, there could be local content rules. This means that programs children are most likely to be watching are probably the Thai-produced ones. I don't think there's any prime-time foreign show at the moment on terrestrial TV (but I watch satellite most of the time personally).

(Also, when a show on terrestrial TV is from abroad, generally you have the choice of watching in the original language, or dubbed into Thai).

If you know someone who reads Thai, you might have more luck with the assorted TV websites.
