BANGKOK: -- AUTHORITIES yesterday accelerated the retrieval of the bodies of two construction workers killed during the demolition of an eight-storey building on Sukhumvit Soi 87 in Bangkok.

The bodies of Prai Kharunram and Boonjang Lertlaong were located under debris on Saturday night but there was insufficient light to extract their remains.

Four workers were killed in Friday’s incident. The other two bodies were found on Friday.

Teerayut Poomipak, director of the Interior Ministry’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said the retrieval of the bodies would require a great amount of time as it involved the use of heavy machines to pierce, cut and lift concrete slabs, with elaborate evaluations required at each step.

Would it not be better to change the ministry's name? Recovering dead bodies & Disaster Prevention & Mitigation doesn't really work in my fallang mind - or maybe lost in translation?

Rush to retrieve bodies apparently means, it can wait until morning, no need to rent a couple of light plants.

The logic was probably

They are not going anywhere

I am wondering why the company allowed those workers to be inside the building whilst it was being demolished.

Don't wonder too much as it is fully covered in Thailand OH&S standards, it comes under the chapter of " we don't give a <deleted>."

Were it not for the whole ghost thing , it is probably that the Imelda Marcos solution would apply in these cases: just keep going with the concrete pour and don't worry about recovering bodies, as she did at the arts centre construction in 1966. As much as owners/developers would like that solution too, it can never happen because most Thais would refuse to enter the building.
