Govt voices commitment to promoting gender equality in society

BANGKOK, 20 December 2016 (NNT) – The government has affirmed it is poised to carry on the policy to reduce social disparities and further promote gender equality in state offices.

Deputy Prime Minister Adm Narong Pipatanasai presided over a seminar to enhance the gender focal point system in the public sector which was held under a concept of reducing disparities for an equal society. In his address, the deputy premier insisted that the current administration, like its predecessors, attaches great importance to gender equality and is devoted to eliminating social gaps.

Adm Narong said the government has abided by the resolution made in 2001 that puts the deputy permanent secretary of each ministry and the director-general of each department in charge of establishing gender focal point units in their agencies and drawing up a gender equality promotion master plan for internal adoption.

He also pointed out that gender equality is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and has been included in the 20-year national strategy of Thailand. Likewise, he said the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan for 2017-2021 will also seek to develop the potential of people of all ages and genders so as to enable them to take part in driving the country’s economy and society forward.

I think it means equal for men and women.

Not sure if the UN goal, included Lady Boys ?

Thailand is the Lady Boy Hub, I think.

Good job, to make everyone feel equal.

So does gender equality mean there will be unisex toilets and bathrooms in all state and public offices in Thailand?

"...The government has affirmed it is poised to carry on the policy to reduce social disparities and further promote gender equality in state offices..."

While they should be commended for at least voicing their intent to do something, if this statement is to be nothing more than just weasel words then the junta and its cronies need to do far more than focus only on state offices.

As others have already pointed out above, they need to be seen to be doing something, and that needs to be not only in state offices, but across the whole of Thai business- and family-life where gender inequality still seems to be as pervasive as it has ever been.

To illustrate this, I hark back to UN Women (and entity of the UN) celebrating International Women’s Day earlier this year through a series of cartoons by Vietnamese women to highlight their understanding of their status and gender equality in that country (see http://asiapacific.unwomen.org/en/news-and-events/stories/2016/03/picturing-gender-equality-in-viet-nam).

One of these cartoons (below), by Tran Thu Huong, appeals to me as being particularly appropriate for the Thai situation that needs to be addressed with far less poise and far more commitment.
