Thailand's Startups Need Air to Breathe

By Tim Culpan

BANGKOK: -- Earlier this year, the Thai government announced its desire to create an economy of fresh new businesses through a 20 billion baht ($555 million) fund.

Its stated goal was to "increase the number of startups in Thailand to 10,000 by 2018," Information and Communication Technology Minister Uttama Savanayana was cited as saying in April, according to the Bangkok Post. "The year 2016 is a golden year for Thailand's startup industry."

At the same time, the government had been polishing off amendments to its Computer Crime Act, which were passed this month by the country's legislature and are due to take effect around the middle of 2017.

"With a revised Computer Crime Act passed and a single gateway now in its sights, Thailand's economic and political leaders need to decide if they want a free and vibrant startup culture, or a meek and mild populace. They can't have both."

Wild guess: they want a meek and non competitive populace with no hope of creating business successes.

Yup - hard to envision a positive environment for startups, a clogged, monitored and very likely slow internet.  A draconian government that inhibits competition, fair bidding and reform.  A struggling economy.  Everything an innovative startup needs is the opposite in thailand.  Best of luck thailand.

I wish someone would polish it off altogether. Our complaints fall on deaf ears. Maybe they need a wax check.

It always amazes me when the number of new startups are touted. Does anyone know how many bite the dust on an annual basis? I am starting to notice a speedier rotation of stores in my area. Sometimes when I see something I like and need I get the urge to buy a dozen as they could be gone by tomorrow. Hands up everyone who have experienced this? Am I alone?

Common sense would be a good start.  It's not about how many, it's about success

What Thai startup business,s need, is not room to breath, but some education in basic business skills, and a swift kick up the arse to get them working, instead of thinking THEY are doing  you the favour of your life by allowing YOU, ( the customer ) to be serviced by their often poor service and  piss poor quality.

They probably have over 10,000 startups a month as desperate people stake out a patch of sidewalk and start selling something.  Anything to help bridge the gap between stagnant wages and rampant inflation brought on as the Chinese (and others) export the seafood, fruits, veggies and other commodities that used to sell for virtual peanuts in Thailand.

But that's probably not the startups they're talking about.

Maybe they need to import some TV shows  about small businesses  and the problems to survive.......

try not to sugar coat it , because probably 50% plus of start-ups fail in the first year or 2 ,  but smart people learn from failure and try again ,

,,,,,,

but you need to have the "I can do it" backbone     ......
