We would like to open a bank account and need a certificate of residency. We are a European couple on holiday with METV visa staying 4 to 5 months in a bungalow of a small private resort. How can we obtain this certificate ? Any help is appreciated !!

Some immigration offices will issue a certificate of residency for those on tourist visas. Proof you are staying long term at the resort would be needed.

If not you could get one from your embassy or consulate.

i opened a bank account (bangkok bank) with a tourist visa, a lease agreement from apartment, a letter from the landlord confirming the authenticity of such lease, and i had to have a form letter (from the bank) notarized at the USA embassy (which certified my passport was not a fake, etc..).  i did this in feb 2016.

If you have a second document like Identity card or driving licence to confirm passport same person then no need of embassy statement. Also the presence of a thai person at the branch can be garanty for account opening.

For european people better never Involve embassy for account opening procedure, they would Immediately Inform the exterior and finance ministery back there becoming a subject under monetary rules control and could be trouble

i should mention i opened accounts with two banks, bangkok bank and krungthai.  this was in bangkok.  i was able to use the bangkok bank form letter (notarized by US embassy) for krungthai also.

i'm not so sure about having a second piece of ID to validate my passport (say a drivers license from USA), in lieu of the embassy notarized letter.  the officers at the bank might believe i've prepared two fake forms of ID.  the bank officers didn't suggest that alternative.

as we know, the rules for opening an account can vary bank to bank and region to region.  the best approach is go to the bank and ask them what they need.
